Claims
- 1. A method for improving communications performance between high speed communications devices, comprising the steps of:
(a) establishing a communications link between a central office (CO) modem and a customer premise equipment (CPE) modem; (b) evaluating the performance of said communications link; (c) identifying impairments on said communications link; (d) determining adjustment parameters to improve the performance of said communications link; (e) modifying said CPE modem in accordance with said determined adjustment parameters to establish an adjusted communications link between said CO modem and said CPE modem.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said modifying step (e) causes said CPE modem to adjust an upstream carrier frequency.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further wherein said modifying step (e) causes said CPE modem to adjust a power level.
- 4. A method for improving communications performance between high speed communications devices, comprising the steps of:
(a) establishing a communications link between a central office (CO) modem and a customer premise equipment (CPE) modem, wherein said communications link uses a default upstream carrier frequency; (b) evaluating the performance of said communications link; (c) identifying one or more impairments on said communications link; (d) determining an adjusted upstream carrier frequency that reduces said identified impairments; (e) establishing an adjusted communications link between said CO modem and said CPE modem, wherein said adjusted communications link uses said adjusted upstream carrier frequency.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein said one or more identified impairments are bridged taps.
- 6. The method of claim 4, wherein said one or more identified impairments is cross-talk.
- 7. A method for improving communications performance between high speed communications devices, comprising the steps of:
(a) establishing a communications link between a central office (CO) modem and a customer premise equipment (CPE) modem; (b) evaluating the performance of said communications link at a plurality of upstream carrier frequencies; (c) determining an adjusted upstream carrier frequency; (d) establishing an adjusted communications link between said CO modem and said CPE modem, wherein said adjusted communications link uses said adjusted upstream carrier frequency.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said determining step (c) identifies an adjusted upstream carrier frequency that avoids bridged taps.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein said determining step (c) identifies an adjusted upstream carrier frequency that reduces cross-talk.
- 10. A system for improving communications performance between high speed communications devices, comprising:
a central office (CO) modem; and a customer premise equipment (CPE) modem in communications with said CO modem over a communications link, wherein said CO modem is configured to determine adjustment parameters to improve the performance of said communications link.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein said adjustment parameters cause said CPE modem to adjust an upstream carrier frequency to avoid cross-talk on said communications link.
- 12. The system of claim 1, wherein said adjustment parameters cause said CPE modem to adjust an upstream carrier frequency to avoid bridged taps on said communications link.
