Claims
- 1. An apparatus for transmitting a digital signal which is robust to multipath degradation and intersymbol interference, the apparatus comprising:
- means for generating a basis set of sequences, each of said sequences comprises multi-valued codes to provide predetermined autocorrelation characteristics, each of said sequences being spectrally shaped with a shaping function and being substantially orthogonal to one another;
- means for data modulating and summing together the basis set of sequences to define a digital signal, the modulated set maintaining a preselected spectral shape through the modulating; and
- means for transmitting through a medium the digital signal to a receiver.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the modulated set comprises sequences which are substantially all mutually orthogonal and have low autocorrelation values except for zero offset.
- 3. A multicarrier system for transmitting digital data from one location to another via atmospheric free space, the system comprising:
- a transmitter for broadcasting a multicarrier digital signal, said transmitter including means for broadcasting a data modulated waveform set including a plurality of waveforms summed together, each of said plurality of waveforms making up said waveform set comprises multi-valued codes to provide predetermined autocorrelation characteristics, each of said plurality of waveforms being spectrally shaped with a shaping function and being substantially orthogonal to other waveforms at a sampling point, each waveform representing a different digital data carrier; and
- a receiver for receiving said modulated waveform set from said transmitter, said receiver including correlation and decoding means for extracting the digital data from said received signal.
- 4. A multicarrier system for transmitting digital data from one location to another via atmospheric free space, the system comprising:
- a transmitter for broadcasting a multicarrier digital signal, said transmitter including means for broadcasting a data modulated spectrally shaped waveform set including a plurality of wideband waveforms summed together, said plurality of waveforms making up said set being substantially orthogonal at the sampling point and each waveform having predetermined autocorrelation characteristics, each waveform representing a different digital data carrier; and
- a receiver for receiving said modulated waveform set from said transmitter, said receiver including correlation and decoding means for extracting the digital data from said received signal;
- wherein said transmitter further includes means for summing a wideband reference signal together with said modulated set and broadcasting said summed signal to said receiver, and wherein said receiver further comprises means for adjusting a baud or sampler clock based upon the measured frequency of said received reference signal whereby an equalizer in said receiver then correctly positions said reference signal along with said digital signal so as to compensate for multipath.
- 5. A multicarrier system for transmitting digital data from one location to another via atmospheric free space, the system comprising:
- a transmitter for broadcasting a multicarrier digital signal, said transmitter including means for broadcasting a data modulated spectrally shaped waveform set including a plurality of wideband waveforms summed together, said plurality of waveforms making up said set being substantially orthogonal at the sampling point and each waveform having predetermined autocorrelation characteristics, each waveform representing a different digital data carrier; and
- a receiver for receiving said modulated waveform set from said transmitter, said receiver including correlation and decoding means for extracting the digital data from said received signal;
- wherein said summed reference signal and modulated set are combined in said transmitter with an analog FM signal to produce a composite FM/digital signal, wherein said resulting composite FM/digital signal is for broadcast to said receiver.
- 6. A transmitter for transmitting a digital signal which is robust to multipath degradation and intersymbol interference comprising:
- a first generator for generating a basis set of sequences, each of said sequences having predetermined autocorrelation characteristics, each of said sequences being spectrally shaped and substantially orthogonal to one another;
- a modulator coupled to said first generator for receiving said basis set of sequences, said modulator further receiving data and modulating said basis set of sequences with said data to provide a modulated set, said modulated set maintaining a preselected spectral shape through the modulation;
- a second generator for generating a reference signal; and
- a first summer coupled to said second generator and said modulator for receiving said reference signal and said modulated set, respectively, said first summer summing said reference signal with said modulated set to generate said digital signal.
- 7. The transmitter of claim 6 wherein each of said sequences comprises multi-valued codes.
- 8. The transmitter of claim 6 wherein each of said sequences is spectrally shaped with a shaping function.
- 9. The transmitter of claim 8 wherein said shaping function provides two separate passbands.
- 10. The transmitter of claim 6 further comprising:
- an exciter for generating an analog FM signal; and
- a second summer coupled to said exciter and said first summer for receiving said analog FM signal and said digital signal, respectively, said second summer summing said analog FM signal with said digital signal to produce a composite FM/digital signal.
- 11. A multicarrier system for transmitting digital data from one location to another via atmospheric free space comprising:
- a transmitter for broadcasting a multicarrier digital signal, said transmitter including
- a first generator for generating a data modulated waveform set including a plurality of waveforms summed together, each waveform representing a different digital data carrier, said plurality of waveforms having predetermined autocorrelation characteristics, said plurality of waveforms being spectrally shaped and substantially orthogonal at a sampling point,
- a second generator for generating a reference signal,
- a first summer coupled to said first and second generators for receiving said data modulated waveform set and said reference signal, respectively, said first summer summing said data modulated waveform set with said reference signal to generate said multicarrier digital signal,
- means for broadcasting said multicarrier digital signal; and
- a receiver for receiving said multicarrier digital signal from said transmitter, said receiver including a correlator and a decoder coupled in series for extracting said digital data from said received signal.
- 12. The system of claim 11 wherein each of said waveforms comprises multi-valued codes.
- 13. The system of claim 11 wherein each of said waveforms is spectrally shaped with a shaping function.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein said shaping function provides two separate passbands.
- 15. The system of claim 11 wherein said transmitter further includes:
- an exciter for generating an analog FM signal; and
- a second summer coupled to said exciter and said first summer for receiving said analog FM signal and said multicarrier digital signal, respectively, said second summer summing said analog FM signal with said multicarrier digital signal to produce a composite FM/digital signal.
