Claims
- 1. A digital baseband (DBB) transmitter comprising:
(a) an analog radio transmitter having real and imaginary signal inputs; (b) a digital DC offset compensation module in communication with the analog radio transmitter and having real and imaginary signal inputs, the digital DC compensation module being configured to adjust the DC level of at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs; and (c) a controller in communication with the digital DC offset compensation module, the controller being configured to determine at least one DC offset compensation value used to suppress carrier leakage occurring in the analog radio transmitter, wherein the controller provides at least one DC offset signal to at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs having a level that corresponds to the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 2. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 further comprising:
(d) a memory in communication with the controller, the memory for storing the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 3. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a temperature sensor in communication with the controller, and the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value if the temperature sensor detects a change in temperature greater than a predetermined threshold, or a temperature excursion beyond a predetermined value or range.
- 4. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the DBB transmitter processes communication signals which include first and second time slots separated by a guard period, and the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value during at least a portion of the guard period.
- 5. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 further comprising:
(d) a modem selectively connected to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module, the modem having real and imaginary signal outputs; and (e) first and second switches respectively connected to the real and imaginary signal outputs of the modem, the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module and the controller, wherein the at least one DC offset compensation value is determined after the switches disconnect the modem from the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module and connect the controller to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 6. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the digital DC offset compensation module comprises:
(i) a first adder having a first input coupled to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and a second input coupled to the controller; and (ii) a second adder having a first input coupled to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and a second input coupled to the controller, wherein the controller provides respective DC offset signals to the second inputs of the first and second adders, the respective DC offset signals having levels which respectively correspond to a first and second DC offset compensation value determined by the controller.
- 7. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the controller sets previously determined DC offset compensation values to zero, prior to determining the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 8. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the analog radio transmitter further comprises an amplifier, wherein the controller sets the amplifier to a maximum gain level, prior to determining the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 9. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the controller disables the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applies a set of different DC offset voltages to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 10. The DBB transmitter of claim 9 wherein the set of different DC offset voltages is applied in accordance with a substantially parabolic function, and the controller performs an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function.
- 11. The DBB transmitter of claim 10 wherein the controller determines the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 12. The DBB transmitter of claim 11 wherein the analog radio transmitter includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the real signal input at the LO frequency.
- 13. The DBB transmitter of claim 1 wherein the controller disables the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applies a set of different DC offset voltages to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 14. The DBB transmitter of claim 13 wherein the set of different DC offset voltages is applied in accordance with a substantially parabolic function, and the controller performs an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function.
- 15. The DBB transmitter of claim 14 wherein the controller determines the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 16. The DBB transmitter of claim 15 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the imaginary signal input at the LO frequency.
- 17. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising:
(a) an analog radio transmitter having real and imaginary signal inputs; (b) a digital DC offset compensation module in communication with the analog radio transmitter and having real and imaginary signal inputs, the digital DC compensation module being configured to adjust the DC level of at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs; and (c) a controller in communication with the digital DC offset compensation module, the controller being configured to determine at least one DC offset compensation value used to suppress carrier leakage occurring in the analog radio transmitter, wherein the controller provides at least one DC offset signal to at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs having a level that corresponds to the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 18. The WTRU of claim 17 further comprising:
(d) a memory in communication with the controller, the memory for storing the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 19. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a temperature sensor in communication with the controller, and the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value if the temperature sensor detects a change in temperature greater than a predetermined threshold, or a temperature excursion beyond a predetermined value or range.
- 20. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the WTRU processes communication signals which include first and second time slots separated by a guard period, and the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value during at least a portion of the guard period.
- 21. The WTRU of claim 17 further comprising:
(d) a modem selectively connected to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module, the modem having real and imaginary signal outputs; and (e) first and second switches respectively connected to the real and imaginary signal outputs of the modem, the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module and the controller, wherein the at least one DC offset compensation value is determined after the switches disconnect the modem from the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module and connect the controller to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 22. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the digital DC offset compensation module comprises:
(i) a first adder having a first input coupled to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and a second input coupled to the controller; and (ii) a second adder having a first input coupled to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and a second input coupled to the controller, wherein the controller provides respective DC offset signals to the second inputs of the first and second adders, the respective DC offset signals having levels which respectively correspond to a first and second DC offset compensation value determined by the controller.
- 23. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the controller sets previously determined DC offset compensation values to zero, prior to determining the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 24. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the analog radio transmitter further comprises an amplifier, wherein the controller sets the amplifier to a maximum gain level, prior to determining the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 25. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the controller disables the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applies a set of different DC offset voltages to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 26. The WTRU of claim 25 wherein the set of different DC offset voltages is applied in accordance with a substantially parabolic function, and the controller performs an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function.
- 27. The WTRU of claim 26 wherein the controller determines the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 28. The WTRU of claim 27 wherein the analog radio transmitter includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the real signal input at the LO frequency.
- 29. The WTRU of claim 17 wherein the controller disables the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applies a set of different DC offset voltages to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 30. The WTRU of claim 29 wherein the set of different DC offset voltages is applied in accordance with a substantially parabolic function, and the controller performs an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function.
- 31. The WTRU of claim 30 wherein the controller determines the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 32. The WTRU of claim 31 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the imaginary signal input at the LO frequency.
- 33. An integrated circuit (IC) comprising:
(a) an analog radio transmitter having real and imaginary signal inputs; (b) a digital DC offset compensation module in communication with the analog radio transmitter and having real and imaginary signal inputs, the digital DC compensation module being configured to adjust the DC level of at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs; and (c) a controller in communication with the digital DC offset compensation module, the controller being configured to determine at least one DC offset compensation value used to suppress carrier leakage occurring in the analog radio transmitter, wherein the controller provides at least one DC offset signal to at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs having a level that corresponds to the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 34. The IC of claim 33 further comprising:
(d) a memory in communication with the controller, the memory for storing the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 35. The IC of claim 33 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a temperature sensor in communication with the controller, wherein the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value if the temperature sensor detects a change in temperature greater than a predetermined threshold, or a temperature excursion beyond a predetermined value or range.
- 36. The IC of claim 33 wherein the IC processes communication signals which include first and second time slots separated by a guard period, and the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value during at least a portion of the guard period.
- 37. The IC of claim 33 further comprising:
(d) a modem selectively connected to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module, the modem having real and imaginary signal outputs; and (e) first and second switches respectively connected to the real and imaginary signal outputs of the modem, the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module, wherein the at least one DC offset compensation value is determined after the switches disconnect the modem from the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module and connect the controller to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 38. The IC of claim 33 wherein the digital DC offset compensation module comprises:
(i) a first adder having a first input coupled to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and a second input coupled to the controller; and (ii) a second adder having a first input coupled to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and a second input coupled to the controller, wherein the controller provides respective DC offset signals to the second inputs of the first and second adders, the respective DC offset signals having levels which respectively correspond to a first and second DC offset compensation value determined by the controller.
- 39. The IC of claim 33 wherein the controller sets previously determined DC offset compensation values to zero, prior to determining the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 40. The IC of claim 33 wherein the analog radio transmitter further comprises an amplifier, wherein the controller sets the amplifier to a maximum gain level, prior to determining the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 41. The IC of claim 33 wherein the controller disables the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applies a set of different DC offset voltages to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 42. The IC of claim 41 wherein the set of different DC offset voltages is applied in accordance with a substantially parabolic function, and the controller performs an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function.
- 43. The IC of claim 42 wherein the controller determines the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 44. The IC of claim 43 wherein the analog radio transmitter includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the real signal input at the LO frequency.
- 45. The IC of claim 33 wherein the controller disables the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applies a set of different DC offset voltages to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module.
- 46. The IC of claim 45 wherein the set of different DC offset voltages is applied in accordance with a substantially parabolic function, and the controller performs an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function.
- 47. The IC of claim 46 wherein the controller determines the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 48. The IC of claim 47 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the imaginary signal input at the LO frequency.
- 49. In a wireless communication system including an analog radio transmitter having real and imaginary signal inputs, a digital DC offset compensation module in communication with the analog radio transmitter and having real and imaginary signal inputs, and a controller in communication with the digital DC offset compensation module, a method of adjusting the DC level of at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs, the method comprising:
(a) the controller determining at least one DC offset compensation value used to suppress carrier leakage occurring in the analog radio transmitter; and (b) the controller providing at least one DC offset signal to the at least one of the real and imaginary signal inputs having a level that corresponds to the at least one DC offset compensation value.
- 50. The method of claim 49 further comprising:
(c) storing the at least one DC offset compensation value in a memory.
- 51. The method of claim 49 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a temperature sensor in communication with the controller, and step (a) is implemented in response to the temperature sensor detecting a change in temperature greater than a predetermined threshold, or a temperature excursion beyond a predetermined value or range.
- 52. The method of claim 49 wherein the communication system processes communication signals which include first and second time slots separated by a guard period, and the controller determines the at least one DC offset compensation value during at least a portion of the guard period.
- 53. The method of claim 49 wherein the analog transmitter further includes an amplifier, the method further comprising:
(c) the controller setting previously determined DC offset compensation values to zero; and (d) the controller setting the amplifier to a maximum gain level.
- 54. The method of claim 49 further comprising:
(c) connecting the controller to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module; (d) the controller disabling the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applying a set of different DC offset voltages to the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module in accordance with a substantially parabolic function; (e) the controller performing an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function; and (f) the controller determining the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 55. The method of claim 54 wherein the analog radio transmitter further includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the real signal input at the LO frequency.
- 56. The method of claim 49 further comprising:
(c) connecting the controller to the real and imaginary signal inputs of the digital DC offset compensation module; (d) the controller disabling the real signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module and applying a set of different DC offset voltages to the imaginary signal input of the digital DC offset compensation module in accordance with a substantially parabolic function; (e) the controller performing an interpolation of at least three measurement points on the parabolic function to determine a minimum detected reading associated with a minimum value of the parabolic function; and (f) the controller determining the DC offset compensation value based on the minimum detected reading.
- 57. The method of claim 56 wherein the analog radio transmitter includes a modulator having a local oscillator (LO) for outputting an LO signal at an LO frequency, and the minimum detected reading is determined for the imaginary signal input at the LO frequency.
