Claims
- 1. A device for providing multiple heat seals along the length of a plastic tubing segment filled with a blood or plasma donation, the device comprising:
- first and second opposed seal platens, each such seal platen comprising a plurality of spaced-apart raised portions along the length of said platen with recessed portions therebetween, the raised and recessed portions on the first platen being in registry with corresponding raised and recessed portions on the second platen;
- means for heating the raised portions of said platens; and
- means for moving the opposed seal platens together onto a plastic tubing segment filled with a blood or plasma donation to form heat seals on those portions of the tubing compressed between the raised platen portions and to form chambers defined by opposed recessed portions, said heat seals defining a plurality of individual and sequential pouches therebetween, wherein each chamber defined by each closed pair of recessed portions is configured to house one of said pouches.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the spaced-apart raised portions are moveable along the length of said platen.
- 3. A device according to claim 2, wherein the distance between pairs of spaced-apart raised portions is successively smaller along the length of each of said elongated platens.
- 4. A device according to claim 2, wherein the raised portions are spaced apart from each other a sufficient distance to provide pouches having desired volumes.
- 5. A device according to claim 2, wherein each of said raised portions comprises means for forming seals which are perforated in a direction orthogonal to the major axis of the opposing seal platens.
- 6. An apparatus adapted to prepare separately sealed and identified portions of a tubing segment from a blood or plasma donation comprising:
- first and second opposing seal means for compressibly sealing a length of plastic tubing segment placed therebetween, the first and second seal means each including a multiplicity of alternating recessed portions and raised portions such that when compressed together on a tubing segment the tubing segment is sealed into individual and sequential pouch portions separated by seal portions;
- means for heating the raised portions of said first and second seal means; and
- means for moving said first and second seal means together and apart, thereby compressibly heat sealing said tubing segment and forming said pouches in a single step.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said seal portions are provided at adjustably moveable spaced-apart intervals, the intervals adapted to provide pouches having a specific volume.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 7 wherein pouch portions are successively smaller along the length of the said tubing segment.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said sealing means includes means for labelling for providing sequential alpha or numeric designators on the seal portions provided between the pouches.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein each of said seal portions is formed in a single step with perforations in a directional orthogonal to the major axis of the tubing segment.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein each of said seal portions is formed in a single step with a narrow area in a direction orthogonal to the major axis of the tubing segment, the narrow area adapted to allow pouches to be separated from one another by tearing-through said narrow area.
