Claims
- 1. A method for compressing a first predetermined bit digital input representative of an image into a second predetermined bit digital output representative of the image, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) defining a logarithmic function for converting the first predetermined bit digital input into the second predetermined bit digital output;
- (b) replacing a portion of the logarithmic function with a polynomial function for forming a resulting function which is continuous in value and slope;
- (c) compressing the first predetermined bit digital input into the second predetermined bit digital output, via a processor, by utilizing the logarithmic and polynomial function which compressing reduces the required storage capacity for storing the image.
- 2. The method as in claim 1, wherein step (b) includes:
- (b1) calculating which portion of the logarithmic function includes a slope with a predetermined quantity; and
- (b2) replacing the portion of the logarithmic function with a slope substantially at the predetermined quantity with the polynomial function which is continuous with the remaining portion of the logarithmic function.
- 3. The method as in claim 2, wherein step (b1) includes calculating which portion of the logarithmic function includes a slope of a value of substantially one.
- 4. The method as in claim 1, wherein the logarithmic and polynomial functions are substantially equal to: ##EQU18##
- 5. The method as in claim 1 further comprising the step of: limiting the number of first bit digital input compressed into the second bit digital output substantially equal to: ##EQU19##
- 6. The method as in claim 1 further comprising the step of converting the second predetermined bit digital output into the first bit digital input substantially equal to: ##EQU20##
- 7. The method as in claim 4, wherein the logarithmic and polynomial functions are alternatively substantially equal to: ##EQU21##
- 8. The method as in claim 4, wherein the logarithmic and polynomial functions are alternatively substantially equal to: ##EQU22##
- 9. The method as in claim 2, wherein step (b) includes calculating a polynomial which contains no discontinuity between it and the logarithmic function.
- 10. A system for compressing a first predetermined bit digital input representative of an image into a second predetermined bit digital output representative of the image, the system comprises:
- (a) means for defining a logarithmic function for converting the first predetermined bit digital input into the second predetermined bit digital output, replacing a portion of the logarithmic function with a polynomial function for forming a resulting function which is continuous in value and slope, and compressing the first predetermined bit digital input into the second predetermined bit digital output by utilizing the logarithmic and polynomial function; and
- (b) means, in electronic communication with said defining means, for forming a cross reference between the first predetermined bit digital input and the second predetermined bit digital output which cross referencing reduces storage capacity for storing the image.
- 11. The system as in claim 10, wherein said forming means includes a look-up table.
- 12. The system as in claim 11, wherein said defining means includes a central processing unit.
- 13. The system as in claim 12 further comprising: (c) memory for storing the second predetermined bit digital output so that storage capacity is minimized.
- 14. The system as in claim 13 further comprising:
- (d) means for manipulating the output of said memory for modifying the image; and
- (e) means for displaying the image for producing an image which substantially retains non-compressed digital characteristics.
- 15. The system as in claim 10, wherein said defining means includes defining the polynomial and logarithmic function by equations substantially similar to: ##EQU23##
- 16. The system as in claim 10, wherein said defining means includes defining the polynomial and logarithmic function by equations substantially similar to: ##EQU24##
- 17. The system as in claim 10, wherein said defining means includes defining the polynomial and logarithmic function by equations substantially similar to: ##EQU25##
- 18. The system as in claim 15 further comprising means for limiting the number of first bit digital input values compressed into a single second bit digital output value.
- 19. The system as in claim 18, wherein said limiting means includes limiting by an expression substantially similar to: ##EQU26##
- 20. A system for compressing a first predetermined bit digital input representative of an image into a second predetermined bit digital output representative of the image, the system comprising:
- (a) means for defining a logarithmic function for converting the first predetermined bit digital input into the second predetermined bit digital output;
- (b) means for replacing a portion of the logarithmic function with a polynomial function for forming a resulting function which is continuous in value and slope; and
- (c) means for compressing the first predetermined bit digital input into the second predetermined bit digital output by utilizing the logarithmic and polynomial function which reduces storage capacity for storing the image.
- 21. The system as in claim 20, wherein said replacing means includes means for calculating which portion of the logarithmic function includes a slope with a predetermined quantity; and means for replacing the portion of the logarithmic function with a slope substantially at the predetermined quantity with the polynomial function.
- 22. The system as in claim 21, wherein said calculating means includes means for calculating which portion of the logarithmic function includes a slope greater than a value substantially equal to one.
- 23. The system as in claim 22, wherein the logarithmic and polynomial functions are substantially equal to: ##EQU27##
- 24. The system as in claim 23 further comprising means for limiting the number of first bit digital input compressed into the second bit digital output substantially equal to: ##EQU28##
- 25. The system as in claim 20 further comprising the means for converting the second predetermined bit digital output into the first bit digital input substantially equal to: ##EQU29##
- 26. The system as in claim 20, wherein the logarithmic and polynomial functions are alternatively substantially equal to: ##EQU30##
- 27. The system as in claim 20, wherein the logarithmic and polynomial functions are alternatively substantially equal to: ##EQU31##
- 28. The system as in claim 21, wherein said defining means includes means for calculating a polynomial which contains no discontinuity between it and the logarithmic function.
