Claims
- 1. A data pattern for a data storage device that uses at least one proximity recording head to read at least a portion of the data pattern, wherein the data pattern is comprised of a plurality of marks having curved edges.
- 2. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are formed by optical recording.
- 3. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the data pattern is located in at least one servo sector on a data storage medium.
- 4. The data pattern of claim 3, wherein the data pattern is comprised of a plurality of servo marks that form a servo pattern.
- 5. The data pattern of claim 4, wherein the plurality of servo marks define a position error signal as a function of radius.
- 6. The data pattern of claim 5, wherein the plurality of servo marks are recorded longitudinally.
- 7. The data pattern of claim 6, wherein an amplitude of a read back signal is used to determine the position error signal.
- 8. The data pattern of claim 7, wherein the amplitude of the read back signal comprises the peak amplitude of the read back signal.
- 9. The data pattern of claim 5, wherein the plurality of servo marks are recorded vertically.
- 10. The data pattern of claim 9, wherein an area under a curve of a read back signal is used to determine the position error signal.
- 11. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the at least one proximity recording head is comprised of at least one magnetic recording head.
- 12. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the data storage device is comprised of a hard disk drive.
- 13. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are comprised of a plurality of circular marks.
- 14. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are comprised of a plurality of oval marks.
- 15. The data pattern of claim 1, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are comprised of a plurality of elliptical marks.
- 16. A data storage device, comprising:
a storage medium having a plurality of marks having curved edges for storing data; and at least one proximity recording head to read at least a portion of the plurality of marks with curved edges.
- 17. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are formed by optical recording.
- 18. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the data pattern is located in at least one servo sector on the storage medium.
- 19. The data storage device of claim 18, wherein the data pattern is comprised of a plurality of servo marks that form a servo pattern.
- 20. The data storage device of claim 19, wherein the plurality of servo marks define a position error signal as a function of radius.
- 21. The data storage device of claim 20, wherein the plurality of servo marks are recorded longitudinally.
- 22. The data storage device of claim 21, wherein an amplitude of a read back signal is used to determine the position error signal.
- 23. The data storage device of claim 22, wherein the amplitude of the read back signal comprises the peak amplitude of the read back signal.
- 24. The data storage device of claim 20, wherein the plurality of servo marks are recorded vertically.
- 25. The data storage device of claim 24, wherein an area under a curve of a read back signal is used to determine the position error signal.
- 26. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the at least one proximity recording head is comprised of at least one magnetic recording head.
- 27. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the data storage device is comprised of a hard disk drive.
- 28. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are comprised of a plurality of circular marks.
- 29. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are comprised of a plurality of oval marks.
- 30. The data storage device of claim 16, wherein the plurality of marks having curved edges are comprised of a plurality of elliptical marks.
- 31. A method for obtaining data from at least one mark having curved edges on a storage medium, the method comprising:
reading the at least one mark with a proximity recording head to obtain a read back signal; and determining an amplitude value for the read back signal.
- 32. The method of claim 31, further comprising the step of forming the at least one mark having curved edges by optical recording.
- 33. The method of claim 32, wherein the step of forming the at least one mark having curved edges by optical recording comprises the step of forming the at least one mark having curved edges by optical recording such that the at least one mark having curved edges defines a position error signal as a function of radius.
- 34. The method of claim 31, wherein the step of reading the at least one mark with a proximity recording head to obtain a read back signal comprises the step of reading the at least one mark with a magnetic recording head to obtain a read back signal that is used to generate a position error signal.
- 35. The method of claim 31, further comprising the step of recording the at least one mark having curved edges longitudinally.
- 36. The method of claim 35, wherein the step of determining an amplitude value for the read back signal comprises the step of determining a peak amplitude value for the read back signal.
- 37. A method for obtaining data from at least one mark having curved edges on a storage medium, the method comprising:
reading the at least one mark with a proximity recording head to obtain a read back signal; and determining a value for the area under the curve for the read back signal.
- 38. The method of claim 37, further comprising the step of forming the at least one mark having curved edges with optical recording.
- 39. The method of claim 38, wherein the step of forming the at least one mark having curved edges by optical recording comprises the step of forming the at least one mark having curved edges by optical recording such that the at least one mark having curved edges defines a position error signal as a function of radius.
- 40. The method of claim 37, wherein the step of reading the at least one mark with a proximity recording head to obtain a read back signal comprises the step of reading the at least one mark with a magnetic recording head to obtain a read back signal that is used to generate a position error signal.
- 41. The method of claim 37, further comprising the step of recording the at least one mark having curved edges vertically.
