Claims
- 1. A method of brokering a service access transaction, the method including:
facilitating service access by a customer via a first service provider of a plurality of service providers; automatically creating a transaction record recording the service access at a first data source; automatically communicating the transaction record from the data source to a settlement system configured to settle a service access transactions via the plurality of service providers; and at the settlement system, automatically determining a sell rate for the service access transaction recorded in the transaction record, the sell rate being the rate charged for the service access by an access broker and being determined utilizing a customer and/or location identifier for the customer as recorded in the transaction record.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the automatic determining of the sell rate comprises accessing a data-driven pricing structure maintained in a database.
- 3. The method of claim 1 including automatically determining any one of a group of identifiers from the transaction record including the customer identifier, the location identifier and a service provider identifier.
- 4. The method of claim 1 including automatically determining an access location for the service access from the transaction record and determining the sell rate utilizing the access location.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the access location comprises a Point-of-Presence (POP) maintained by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- 6. The method of claim 1 including automatically determining an access contract associated with the customer and determining the sell rate utilizing the access contract.
- 7. The method of claim 6 including automatically determining whether a promotion is active for the access contract.
- 8. The method of claim 1 including automatically determining an access pricing plan associated with the customer and determining the sell rate utilizing the access pricing plan.
- 9. The method of claim 6 including automatically determining whether the customer is identified in the access contract as a reseller and, if so, automatically determine a reseller discount and applying the reseller discount to the sell rate.
- 10. The method of claim 1 including automatically determining the sell rate for the service access utilizing any one of a group of information determined from the transaction record including a pricing plan associated with the customer, an access location of the service access, a date and time of the service access, service provider, access type, service type, accumulated usage for the customer over a first predetermined time, accumulated number of transactions for the customer over a second predetermined time period, a flat rate associated with the customer and contract information associated with the customer.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the contract information relates to a contract between the access broker and the customer.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the customer comprises any one of a group of customers including an end-user, a business, an Internet carrier, a Value-Added Reseller (VAR), and a channel.
- 13. The method of claim 1 wherein the automatically determined sell rate includes any one of a group including a fixed rate charged for the service access, a scaled rate based on the duration of the service access, a free quantity comprising an amount of time that is excluded from the scale rate, transaction pricing, and a combination of transaction and usage pricing.
- 14. The method of claim 1 including automatically determining a buy rate for the service access recorded in the transaction record, the buy rate being the rate paid to the first service provider by the access broker for the service access.
- 15. The method of claim 14 including automatically determining the buy rate utilizing information determined from the transaction record including any one of a group including first provider identification information, location information, access type information, service type information and contract information.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the contract information relates to a contract between the access broker and the service provider.
- 17. The method of claim 15 wherein the access type information indicates the access type as being any one of a group including dialup-modem access, toll-free access, ISDN access, DSL access, T1 access, cable modem access and wireless access.
- 18. The method of claim 1 including automatically adjusting the customer account balances utilizing the determined sell rate.
- 19. The method of claim 14 including automatically adjusting a service provider account balance utilizing the determined buy rate.
- 20. A system to broker a service access transaction, the system including:
a connection application to facilitate service access by a customer via a first service provider of a plurality of service providers; a transaction server automatically to create a transaction record recording the service access at a first data source, and automatically to communicate the transaction record to a settlement system; and a settlement application, at the settlement system, to settle service access transactions via the plurality of service providers, the settlement application automatically to determine a sell rate for the service access transaction recorded in the transaction record, the sell rate being the rate charged for the service access by an access broker and being determined utilizing a customer and/or location identifier for the customer as recorded in the transaction record.
- 21. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application utilizes a data-driven pricing structure maintained in a database.
- 22. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to automatically determine any one of a group of identifiers from the transaction record including the customer identifier, the location identifier and a service provider identifier.
- 23. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to determine an access location for the service access from the transaction record and determining the sell rate utilizing the access location.
- 24. The system of claim 23 wherein the access location comprises a Point-of-Presence (POP) maintained by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- 25. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to determine an access contract associated with the customer and determining the sell rate utilizing the access contract.
- 26. The system of claim 25 wherein the settlement application is to determine whether a promotion is active for the access contract.
- 27. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to determine an access pricing plan associated with the customer and to determine the sell rate utilizing the access pricing plan.
- 28. The method of claim 25 wherein the settlement application is to determine whether the customer is identified in the access contract as a reseller and, if so, automatically to determine a reseller discount and to apply the reseller discount to the sell rate.
- 29. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to determine the sell rate for the service access utilizing any one of a group of information determined from the transaction record including a pricing plan associated with the customer, an access location of the service access, a date and time of the service access, service provider, access type, accumulated usage for the customer over a first predetermined time and accumulated number of transactions for the customer over a second predetermined time period, a flat rate associated with the customer and contract information associated with the customer.
- 30. The system of claim 29 wherein the contract information relates to a contract between the access broker and the customer.
- 31. The system of claim 29 wherein the customer comprises any one of a group of customers including an end-user, a business, an Internet carrier, a Value-Added Reseller (VAR), and a channel.
- 32. The system of claim 20 wherein the sell rate includes any one of a group including a fixed rate charged for the service access, a scaled rate based on the duration of the service access, a free quantity comprising an amount of time that is excluded from the scale rate, transaction pricing, and a combination of transaction and usage pricing.
- 33. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to determine a buy rate for the service access recorded in the transaction record, the buy rate being the rate paid to the first service provider by the access broker for the service access.
- 34. The system of claim 33 wherein the settlement application is to determine the buy rate utilizing information determined from the transaction record including any one of a group including first provider identification information, location information, access type information, service type information and contract information.
- 35. The system of claim 33 wherein the contract information relates to a contract between the access broker and the service provider.
- 36. The system of claim 34 wherein the access type information indicates the access type as being any one of a group including dialup-modem access, toll-free access, ISDN access, DSL access, T1 access, cable modem access and wireless access.
- 37. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to adjust the customer account balances utilizing the determined sell rate.
- 38. The system of claim 20 wherein the settlement application is to adjust a service provider account balance utilizing the determined buy rate.
- 39. A machine-readable medium embodying a sequence of instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:
facilitate service access by a customer via a first service provider of a plurality of service providers; automatically create a transaction record recording the service access at a first data source; automatically communicate the transaction record from the data source to a settlement system configured to settle a service access transactions via the plurality of service providers; and automatically determine a sell rate for the service access transaction recorded in the transaction record, the sell rate being the rate charged for the service access by an access broker and being determined utilizing a customer and/or location identifier for the customer as recorded in the transaction record.
- 40. A system to broker a service access transaction, the method including:
means for facilitating service access by a customer via a first service provider of a plurality of service providers; means for creating a transaction record recording the service access at a first data source, and automatically to communicate the transaction record to a settlement system; and means for determining a sell rate for the service access transaction recorded in the transaction record, the sell rate being the rate charged for the service access by an access broker and being determined utilizing a customer and/or location identifier for the customer as recorded in the transaction record.
- 41. A method of brokering a service access transaction, the method including:
receiving information concerning a service access transaction; identifying a plurality of customers associated with the service access transaction, wherein the plurality of customers constitute a multi-tier customer structure; identifying a plurality of pricing plans, each of the plurality of pricing plans being associated with a respective customer of the plurality of customers; and calculating a sell price pertaining to the service access transaction for each of the plurality of customers based on a respective associated pricing plan.
- 42. The method of claim 41 wherein the calculating of the sell price includes identifying a pricing mechanism reflected in the pricing plan associated with at least one of the plurality of customers, and applying the pricing mechanism to a sell price for the at least one of the plurality of customers.
- 43. The method of claim 42 wherein the pricing mechanism includes any one of a group including a discount, a promotion, a fee, and a commitment.
- 44. The method of claim 41 wherein the calculating of the sell price includes applying usage and/or transaction pricing in the determination of a sell price for at least a first customer of the plurality of customers.
- 45. The method of claim 44 wherein the usage pricing is based on any one of a group including a usage time total and a usage value total.
- 46. The method of claim 44 wherein the usage and/or transaction pricing applied in the determination of the sell price for the at least first customer is based on an accumulated usage and/or transaction amount for the at least first customer.
- 47. The method of claim 44 wherein the usage and/or transaction pricing applied in the determination of the sell price for the at least first customer is based on an accumulated usage and/or transaction amounts for a second customer of the plurality of customers.
- 48. The method of claim 41 wherein the calculating of the sell price includes calculating a sell price for at least one of the plurality of customers based on any one of a group including an identity of a customer that requested the service access, an identity of a provider that provided the service access, a service access location, service type, access type, a service access time of day, and a service access day of week.
- 49. The method of claim 41 wherein the calculating of the sell price includes identifying a subscription and/or flat rate reflected in the pricing plan associated with at least one of the plurality of customers, and applying the subscription and/or flat rate in the calculation of a sell price for the at least one of the plurality of customers.
- 50. A system to broker a service access transaction, the system including:
a transaction server to create a record concerning a service access transaction; a settlement application to receive the record concerning the service access transaction, to identify a plurality of customers associated with the service access transaction utilizing the record wherein the plurality of customers constitute a multi-tier customer structure, to identify a plurality of pricing plans, each of the plurality of pricing plans being associated with a respective customer of the plurality of customers, and to calculate a sell price pertaining to the service access transaction for each of the plurality of customers based on a respective associated pricing plan.
- 51. The system of claim 50 wherein the settlement application is to identify a pricing mechanism reflected in the pricing plan associated with at least one of the plurality of customers, and to apply the pricing mechanism to a sell price for the at least one of the plurality of customers.
- 52. The system of claim 51 wherein the pricing mechanism includes any one of a group including a discount, promotion, a fee and a commitment.
- 53. The system of claim 50 wherein the settlement system is to apply usage and/or transaction pricing in the determination of a sell price for at least a first customer of the plurality of customers.
- 54. The system of claim 52 wherein the usage pricing is based on any one of a group including a usage time total and a usage value total.
- 55. The system of claim 52 wherein the usage and/or transaction pricing applied in the determination of the sell price for the at least first customer is based on an accumulated usage and/or transaction amounts for the at least first customer.
- 56. The system of claim 52 wherein the usage and/or transaction pricing applied in the determination of the sell price for the at least first customer is based on an accumulated usage and/or transaction amounts for a second customer of the plurality of customers.
- 57. The system of claim 50 wherein the settlement system is to calculate a sell price for at least one of the plurality of customers based on any one of a group including an identity of a customer that requested the service access, an identity of the service provider that provided the service access, a service access location, service or product type, access type, a service access time of day, and a service access day of week.
- 58. The system of claim 49 wherein the settlement system is to identify a subscription and/or flat rate reflected in the pricing plan associated with at least one of the plurality of customers, and to apply the subscription and/or flat rate in the calculation of a sell price for the at least one of the plurality of customers.
