Claims
- 1. An image forming apparatus for being loaded with a cartridge in an exchangeable manner, and for image forming to a recording sheet with expendable material contained in said cartridge, said image forming apparatus comprising:
a writer, operated if it is detected that an estimated used amount of said expendable material has become equal to or more than a predetermined value according to checking of said estimated used amount, for writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material to a memory; a checking unit, operated upon setting of said cartridge in an apparatus main unit, for checking whether said memory stores said shortage information; a controller for allowing said image forming before removal of said cartridge from said apparatus main unit even after said writer writes said shortage information to said memory, and for, after said removal of said cartridge, driving said checking unit again upon setting of said cartridge in said apparatus main unit, said controller inhibiting said image forming if it is detected that said memory stores said shortage information.
- 2. An image forming apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said memory is incorporated in said apparatus main unit, and said shortage information is stored in association of discernment information of said cartridge.
- 3. An image forming apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said memory is associated with said cartridge.
- 4. An image forming apparatus as defined in claim 3, wherein said memory is externally removable from a body of said cartridge.
- 5. An image forming apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said shortage information stored in said memory is in a ciphered form.
- 6. An image forming apparatus for being loaded with a cartridge in an exchangeable manner, and for image forming to a recording sheet with expendable material contained in said cartridge, said image forming apparatus comprising:
a writer for writing an estimated used amount of said expendable material to a memory; a checking unit for checking what is stored in said memory, and for detecting whether said estimated used amount has become equal to or more than a predetermined value; and a controller for allowing said image forming before removal of said cartridge from an apparatus main unit even after said estimated used amount has become said predetermined value or more, and for, after said removal of said cartridge, driving said checking unit again upon setting of said cartridge in said apparatus main unit, said controller inhibiting said image forming if it is detected that said estimated used amount has become said predetermined value or more.
- 7. A detector device for detecting an improper cartridge, comprising:
an estimating unit for estimating when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of an image forming apparatus, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; a cartridge memory, incorporated in said cartridge, for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; a writer, operated responsively if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing said shortage information to said cartridge memory upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus; a determiner, operated responsively if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, for determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge.
- 8. A detector device as defined in claim 7, further comprising:
an indicator, operated responsively if said determiner determines said cartridge as said improper cartridge, for indicating alarm information; and an inhibitor, operated responsively if said determiner determines said cartridge as said improper cartridge, for inhibiting image forming of said image forming apparatus loaded with said improper cartridge.
- 9. A detector device as defined in claim 7, further comprising a checking unit for checking existence of said cartridge memory, and for judging that said cartridge is said improper cartridge in case of lack of said cartridge memory.
- 10. A detector device as defined in claim 7, wherein determination of said determiner is effected upon setting of said cartridge in said image forming apparatus.
- 11. A detector device as defined in claim 7, wherein said apparatus operating information comprises a cumulative number of recording sheets after image forming, or a cumulative amount of image data.
- 12. A detector device for detecting an improper cartridge, comprising:
an estimating unit for estimating when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of an image forming apparatus, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; a cartridge memory, incorporated in said cartridge, for storing discernment information of said cartridge, and removal information of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus; a writer, operated responsively if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing said discernment information and shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to an apparatus memory in said image forming apparatus, further said writer, operated responsively if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, for writing said removal information to said cartridge memory; a determiner, operated responsively if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said cartridge, for determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge.
- 13. A detecting method of detecting whether a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner is an improper cartridge, comprising steps of:
estimating when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of said image forming apparatus, said expendable material being contained in said cartridge; if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, writing shortage information to said cartridge memory incorporated in said cartridge upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, said shortage information representing shortage of said expendable material after being used up; if said cartridge is associated with said shortage information, determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge upon reusing; and if said cartridge is determined as said improper cartridge, generating an alarm signal or inhibiting operation of image forming.
- 14. A detecting method as defined in claim 13, wherein said operating information of said image forming apparatus comprises a cumulative number of recording sheets after image forming, or a cumulative amount of image data.
- 15. A detecting method of detecting whether a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner is an improper cartridge, comprising steps of:
estimating when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of said image forming apparatus, said expendable material being contained in said cartridge; if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, writing discernment information and shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to an apparatus memory in said image forming apparatus, said discernment information being read from a cartridge memory in said cartridge; if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, writing removal information of said removal to said cartridge memory; if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge; and if said cartridge is determined as said improper cartridge, generating an alarm signal or inhibiting operation of image forming.
- 16. An improper cartridge detecting system, comprising a cartridge and an image forming apparatus in which said cartridge is set in an exchangeable manner;
said cartridge including an expendable material chamber for containing expendable material adapted to image forming, and a cartridge memory for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; said image forming apparatus including: an image forming unit for image forming to a recording sheet; an estimating unit for estimating when a remaining amount of said expendable material in said cartridge becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of said image forming unit; a writer, operated responsively if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to said cartridge memory upon operation of removal of said cartridge; an inhibitor for checking whether said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, and for, if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, inhibiting operation of said image forming unit in consideration of an improper cartridge.
- 17. An improper cartridge detecting system as defined in claim 16, wherein said apparatus operating information comprises a cumulative number of recording sheets after image forming, or a cumulative amount of image data.
- 18. An improper cartridge detecting system, comprising a cartridge and an image forming apparatus in which said cartridge is set in an exchangeable manner;
said cartridge including an expendable material chamber for containing expendable material adapted to image forming, and a cartridge memory for storing discernment information and removal information of a removed state from said image forming apparatus; said image forming apparatus including: an image forming unit for image forming to a recording sheet; an estimating unit for estimating when a remaining amount of said expendable material in said cartridge becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of said image forming unit; a writer, operated in response to estimation of when said remaining amount becomes said reference amount or less, for writing said discernment information to an apparatus memory together with shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up, said writer being in response if said removal information exists upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, for writing removal information of a removed state of said cartridge to said cartridge memory; an inhibitor, operated responsively if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, for inhibiting operation of said image forming unit by considering an improper cartridge.
- 19. A cartridge comprising:
an expendable material chamber for containing expendable material adapted to image forming; and a cartridge memory for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up, and removal information of a removed state from an image forming apparatus.
- 20. A recording medium for storing a program to execute steps including:
estimating when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of an image forming apparatus, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to a cartridge memory upon operation of removal of said cartridge, said cartridge memory being incorporated in said cartridge; checking whether said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, wherein if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, said cartridge is detected as improper.
- 21. A recording medium for storing a program to execute steps including:
estimating when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount by considering operating information of an image forming apparatus, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; if it is estimated that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, writing discernment information and shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to an apparatus memory in said image forming apparatus, said discernment information being read from a cartridge memory in said cartridge; if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, writing removal information of said removal to said cartridge memory; and if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, determining said cartridge as improper.
- 22. A detector device for detecting an improper cartridge, comprising:
a detector for detecting when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; a cartridge memory, incorporated in said cartridge, for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; a writer, operated responsively if said detector detects that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing said shortage information to said cartridge memory upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus; and a determiner for checking existence of said shortage information in said cartridge memory, and for, if said shortage information exists, determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge.
- 23. A detector device as defined in claim 22, further comprising an inhibitor, operated responsively if said determiner determines said cartridge as said improper cartridge, for inhibiting image forming of said image forming apparatus loaded with said improper cartridge.
- 24. A detector device as defined in claim 22, further comprising an indicator, operated responsively if said determiner determines said cartridge as said improper cartridge, for indicating alarm information.
- 25. A detector device as defined in claim 22, further comprising a checking unit for checking existence of said cartridge memory, and for judging that said cartridge is said improper cartridge in case of lack of said cartridge memory.
- 26. A detector device as defined in claim 22, wherein determination of said determiner is effected upon setting of said cartridge in said image forming apparatus.
- 27. A detector device for detecting an improper cartridge, comprising:
a detector for detecting when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; a cartridge memory, incorporated in said cartridge, for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; a writer, operated responsively if said detector detects that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing said shortage information to said cartridge memory, further said writer, operated responsively upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, for writing removal information to said cartridge memory; and a determiner, operated responsively if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information and stores said removal information, for determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge.
- 28. A detector device for detecting an improper cartridge, comprising:
a cartridge memory, incorporated in a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus, for storing discernment information for discerning said cartridge, and removal information of a removed state of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus; a detector for measuring a remaining amount of expendable material contained in said cartridge, and for detecting when said remaining amount becomes equal to or less than a reference amount; an apparatus memory, incorporated in said image forming apparatus, for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; a writer, operated responsively if said detector detects that said remaining amount becomes said reference amount or less, for writing said shortage information to said apparatus memory, further said writer, operated responsively if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, for writing said removal information to said cartridge memory; and a determiner, operated responsively if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, for determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge.
- 29. A detecting method of detecting whether a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner is an improper cartridge, comprising steps of:
measuring a remaining amount of expendable material in said cartridge; if it is detected that said remaining amount has become equal to or less than a reference amount, writing shortage information to a cartridge memory in said cartridge upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, said shortage information representing shortage of said expendable material after being used up; if said cartridge is associated with said shortage information, determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge upon reusing; and if said cartridge is determined as said improper cartridge, generating an alarm signal or inhibiting operation of image forming.
- 30. A detecting method of detecting whether a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner is an improper cartridge, comprising steps of:
measuring a remaining amount of expendable material in said cartridge; if it is detected that said remaining amount has become equal to or less than a reference amount, writing shortage information to a cartridge memory in said cartridge, said shortage information representing shortage of said expendable material after being used up; upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, writing removal information of said removal to said cartridge memory; if said cartridge is associated with said shortage information and said removal information, determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge upon reusing; and if said cartridge is determined as said improper cartridge, generating an alarm signal or inhibiting operation of image forming.
- 31. A detecting method of detecting whether a cartridge set in an image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner is an improper cartridge, comprising steps of:
measuring a remaining amount of expendable material in said cartridge; if it is detected that said remaining amount has become equal to or less than a reference amount, writing discernment information and shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to an apparatus memory in said image forming apparatus, said discernment information being read from a cartridge memory in said cartridge; if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, writing removal information of said removal to said cartridge memory; if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, determining said cartridge as said improper cartridge; and if said cartridge is determined as said improper cartridge, generating an alarm signal or inhibiting operation of image forming.
- 32. A recording medium for storing a program to execute processes in a computer for an image forming apparatus, said processes comprising:
detecting when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; if it is detected that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material to a cartridge memory in said cartridge; if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, determining said cartridge as improper.
- 33. A recording medium for storing a program to execute processes in a computer for an image forming apparatus, said processes comprising:
detecting when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; if it is detected that said remaining amount has become equal to or less than said reference amount, writing shortage information to a cartridge memory in said cartridge, said shortage information representing shortage of said expendable material after being used up; upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, writing removal information of said removal to said cartridge memory; and if said cartridge is associated with said shortage information and said removal information, determining said cartridge as improper upon reusing.
- 34. A recording medium for storing a program to execute processes in a computer for an image forming apparatus, said processes comprising:
detecting when a remaining amount of expendable material becomes equal to or less than a reference amount, said expendable material being contained in a cartridge set in said image forming apparatus in an exchangeable manner; if it is detected that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material to an apparatus memory in said image forming apparatus together with discernment information read from a cartridge memory in said cartridge; if said apparatus memory stores shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, writing said removal information to said cartridge memory; if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, determining said cartridge as improper.
- 35. An improper cartridge detecting system, comprising a cartridge and an image forming apparatus in which said cartridge is set in an exchangeable manner;
said cartridge including an expendable material chamber for containing expendable material adapted to image forming, and a cartridge memory for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; said image forming apparatus including: an image forming unit for image forming to a recording sheet; a detector for detecting when a remaining amount of said expendable material in said cartridge becomes equal to or less than a reference amount; a writer, operated responsively if it is detected that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to said cartridge memory; and a determiner for checking whether said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, and for, if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information, determining said cartridge as improper.
- 36. An improper cartridge detecting system, comprising a cartridge and an image forming apparatus in which said cartridge is set in an exchangeable manner;
said cartridge including an expendable material chamber for containing expendable material adapted to image forming, and a cartridge memory for storing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up; said image forming apparatus including: an image forming unit for image forming to a recording sheet; a detector for detecting when a remaining amount of said expendable material in said cartridge becomes equal to or less than a reference amount; a first writer, operated responsively if it is detected that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing shortage information of shortage of said expendable material after being used up to said cartridge memory; a second writer for writing removal information to said cartridge memory, said removal information representing a removed state of said cartridge from an apparatus main unit; a determiner for checking whether said cartridge memory stores said shortage information and said removal information, and for, if said cartridge memory stores said shortage information and said removal information, determining said cartridge as improper.
- 37. An improper cartridge detecting system, comprising a cartridge and an image forming apparatus in which said cartridge is set in an exchangeable manner;
said cartridge including an expendable material chamber for containing expendable material adapted to image forming, and a cartridge memory for storing discernment information for cartridge discernment, and removal information of a cartridge removed state from said image forming apparatus; said image forming apparatus including: an image forming unit for image forming to a recording sheet; a detector for detecting when a remaining amount of said expendable material in said cartridge becomes equal to or less than a reference amount; an apparatus memory, incorporated in said image forming apparatus; a writer, operated responsively if said detector detects that said remaining amount has become said reference amount or less, for writing shortage information to said apparatus memory, said shortage information representing shortage of said expendable material after being used up, further said writer, operated responsively if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information upon operation of removal of said cartridge from said image forming apparatus, for writing said removal information to said cartridge memory; and a determiner, operated responsively if said cartridge memory stores said removal information and also if said apparatus memory stores said shortage information associated with said discernment information of said cartridge, for determining said cartridge as improper.
