- 9. A method for controlling the moisture gradient of a fibrous web, comprising the steps of:pre-moistewi-ng the web, to raise the moisture content of the web; calendering the web after it has been pre-moistened in a first set of calendering rolls comprised of a plurality of rigid-shell press rolls and resilient-shell backing rolls for the press rolls, placed alternately one after the other, in which connection successive nips arc situated between the press rolls and the backing rolls placed against each other, as well as a reversing or guide member guiding the run of the fibrous web, wherein the web is dried in the first set of calendering rolls; subjecting the web to intermediate moistening after it has passed through the first sot of calendering rolls, to raise the moisture content of the web; and calendering the web after it the intermediate moistening step in a second set of calendering rolls comprised of a plurality of rigid-shell press rolls and resilient-shell backing rolls for the press rolls, placed alternately one after the other, in which connection successive nips are situated between the press rolls and the backing rolls placed against each other, as well as a reversing or guide member guiding the run of the fibrous web, the web being dried to a desired final moisture level in the second set of calendering rolls; and minimizing the formation of drop marks by lowering the surface energy of the web prior to subjecting the web to intermediate moistening.
- 10. The method of 9 wherein the step of lowering the surface energy of the web comprises corona treating the web prior to the intermediate moistening.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein the intermediate moistening is performed by a water moistener.
