Claims
- 1. A method of dispensing articles stored in drawers of a cabinet, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) accepting a request for dispensing a desired article,
- b) selecting one of the drawers in the cabinet which contains the desired article,
- c) determining a location within said selected drawer at which the desired article is contained,
- d) automatically opening the selected drawer to a distance such that the desired article is exposed to an operator and such that no other article is exposed, the automatic opening step being performed by moving the drawer until the location determined in step (c) becomes exposed to the operator, and
- e) making a record of the distance to which the drawer was opened in step (d).
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein steps (a) through (e) are performed repeatedly, and wherein on subsequent iterations of the method, step (c) comprises the step of reading the record made in the previous iteration of step (e), wherein each drawer is opened only to a distance that exposes a first non-empty location within the drawer.
- 3. A method of dispensing articles stored in a plurality of drawers, each of the drawers being linearly movable from a closed position to an open position, each of the drawers being capable of being latched in the closed position, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) selecting a drawer to be opened,
- b) automatically determining a variable distance to which said drawer will be opened,
- c) unlatching the drawer selected in step (a), and
- d) linearly moving said drawer to the open position, while limiting movement of said drawer so as to prevent the drawer from moving beyond said distance.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of automatically maintaining a record of the distance of movement of said drawer, wherein the method is performed repeatedly, and wherein the method further comprises the step of permitting said drawer to move by a greater distance the next time the drawer is moved to its opened position.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of automatically determining a number of articles remaining in each drawer, based on the distances to which each drawer has moved.
- 6. The method of claim 3, wherein at least one of the drawers has a plurality of compartments, and wherein step (d) comprises the step of exposing some of said compartments of one of said drawers.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein step (d) also comprises the step of hiding others of said compartments.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein exactly one compartment containing articles is exposed.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein at least one empty compartment is exposed.
- 10. A method of dispensing articles stored in a plurality of drawers, at least one of the drawers having a plurality of compartments, each of the drawers being linearly movable from a closed position to an open position, each of the drawers being capable of being latched in the closed position, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) selecting a drawer to be opened,
- b) automatically determining a variable number of compartments to be exposed,
- c) unlatching the drawer selected in step (a),
- d) linearly moving said drawer to the open position, while limiting movement of said drawer so as to expose only said number of said compartments.
- 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of automatically maintaining a record of the distance of movement of said drawer, wherein the method is performed repeatedly, and wherein the method further comprises the step of permitting said drawer to move by a greater distance the next time the drawer is moved to its opened position.
- 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of automatically determining a number of articles remaining in each drawer, based on the distances to which each drawer has moved.
- 13. A method of dispensing articles stored in a plurality of drawers, each of the drawers being linearly movable from a closed position to an open position, each of the drawers being capable of being latched in the closed position, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) selecting a drawer to be opened,
- b) unlatching the drawer selected in step (a),
- c) linearly moving said drawer to the open position, while limiting movement of said drawer so as to prevent the drawer from moving beyond a preselected distance, and
- d) automatically maintaining a record of the distance of movement of said drawer,
- wherein the method is performed repeatedly, and wherein the method further comprises the step of permitting said drawer to move by a greater distance the next time the drawer is moved to its opened position.
- 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of automatically determining a number of articles remaining in each drawer, based on the distances to which each drawer has moved.
- 15. A method of dispensing articles stored in a plurality of drawers, at least one of the drawers having a plurality of compartments, each of the drawers being linearly movable from a closed position to an open position, each of the drawers being capable of being latched in the closed position, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) selecting a drawer to be opened,
- b) unlatching the drawer selected in step (a),
- c) linearly moving said drawer to the open position, while limiting movement of said drawer so as to expose a preselected number of said compartments, and
- d) automatically maintaining a record of the distance of movement of said drawer,
- wherein the method is performed repeatedly, wherein the method further comprises the step of permitting said drawer to move by a greater distance the next time the drawer is moved to its opened position.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of automatically determining a number of articles remaining in each drawer, based on the distances to which each drawer has moved.
