Claims
- 1. A method for branching to an instruction in a computer program, comprising the steps of:
- a) searching for a key associated with a data structure;
- b) if the key is found, then:
- 1) retrieving a memory address stored in an entry in the data structure, the entry indexed by the key;
- 2) loading the memory address into a program counter (PC) register associated with the computer program;
- 3) queuing the computer program for execution of an instruction stored at the memory address loaded into the PC register;
- 4) fetching the instruction stored at the memory address;
- 5) dispatching the computer program for execution of the instruction; and
- 6) executing the instruction.
- 2. A method for branching to an instruction in a computer program, comprising the steps of:
- a) executing a current instruction in the computer program to search for a key associated with a data structure, the current instruction fetched from a current memory address specified by a program counter (PC) register;
- b) if the key is found, then:
- 1) retrieving a memory address stored in an entry in the data structure, the entry indexed by the key;
- 2) loading the memory address into a program counter (PC) register associated with the computer program;
- 3) queuing the computer program for execution of an instruction in the computer program, the instruction stored at the memory address specified by the PC register;
- 4) fetching the instruction stored at the memory address;
- 5) dispatching the computer program for execution of the instruction; and
- 6) executing the instruction.
- 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the steps of:
- a) if the key is not found, then:
- 1) incrementing the contents of the PC register to specify a next memory address;
- 2) queuing the computer program for execution of a next instruction in the computer program, the next instruction stored at the next memory address specified by the PC register;
- 3) fetching the next instruction specified by the PC register;
- 4) dispatching the program for execution of the next instruction; and
- 5) executing the next instruction.
