Claims
- 1. A method by which a communication device locates a wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment, comprising:examining a plurality of frequency bands in a predetermined order specified by a frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located; and identifying a service class category of service provider for the acceptable service provider; and further comprising determining whether a last frequency band used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule; and if the last frequency band used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of identifying a service class category of service provider for the acceptable service provider further comprises the step of comparing information broadcast on a frequency band control channel with a plurality of service class categories of service providers.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of comparing information further comprises the step of comparing service identifier codes.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of comparing information further comprises the step of comparing service operator codes.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of modifying a plurality of service class categories of service providers using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of modifying a plurality of service class categories of service providers using information from a keypad.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 9. A method by which a communication device locates a wireless service provider in multi-service provider environment, comprising:examining a plurality of frequency bands in a predetermined order specified by a frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located; and identifying a service class category of service provider from a plurality of service class categories and identifying an associated alphanumeric indicator for the acceptable service provider; and further comprising determining whether a last frequency band used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule; and if the last frequency band used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of displaying the alphanumeric indicator of the acceptable service provider.
- 11. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of modifying alphanumeric indicators associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 12. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of modifying alphanumeric indicators associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers using information from a keypad.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 14. The method of claim 9, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 15. A wireless communication device that locates a wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment, comprising:a memory for storing a frequency band search schedule having a plurality of frequency bands in a predetermined order; and for storing information on a plurality of categories of service providers; a processor for examining the plurality of frequency bands in the order specified by the frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located; and for identifying a service class category of service provider for the acceptable service provider; wherein the processor determines whether a last frequency band used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule; and if the last frequency band used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 16. The device of claim 15, wherein the processor further compares information broadcast on a frequency band control channel with the stored information on a plurality of service class categories of service providers.
- 17. The device of claim 16, wherein the processor compares service identifier codes.
- 18. The device of claim 16 wherein the processor compares service operator codes.
- 19. The device of claim 15, wherein the information on a plurality of service class categories of service providers is modified using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 20. The device of claim 15, wherein the information on a plurality of service class categories of service providers is modified using information from a keypad.
- 21. The device of claim 15, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 22. The device of claim 15, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 23. A wireless communication device that locates a wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment, comprising:a memory for (1) storing a frequency band search schedule having a plurality of bands in a predetermined order; (2) storing information for a plurality of categories of service providers; and (3) storing alphanumeric indicators associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers; and a processor for (1) examining the plurality of frequency bands in the order specified by the frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located and (2) identifying a category of service provider and an associated alphanumeric indicator for the acceptable service provider; wherein the processor determines whether a last frequency band used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule; and if the last frequency band used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequency bands in the frequency band search schedule until a frequency band having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 24. The device of claim 23, further comprising a display for displaying the alphanumeric indicator of the acceptable service provider.
- 25. The device of claim 23, wherein the alphanumeric indicator associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers is modified using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 26. The device of claim 23, wherein the alphanumeric indicator associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers is modified using information from a keypad.
- 27. The device of claim 23, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 28. The device of claim 23, wherein the last frequency band used is a frequency band that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 29. A method by which a communication device locates a wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment, comprising:examining a plurality of frequencies in a predetermined order specified by a frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located; and identifying a service class category of service provider for the acceptable service provider; and further comprising determining whether a last frequency used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule; and if the last frequency used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 30. The method of claim 29, wherein identifying a service class category of service provider for the acceptable service provider further comprises comparing information broadcast on a control channel with a plurality of service class categories of service providers.
- 31. The method of claim 30, wherein comparing information further comprises comparing service identifier codes.
- 32. The method of claim 30, wherein comparing information further comprises comparing service operator codes.
- 33. The method of claims 29, further comprising modifying a plurality of service class categories of service providers using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 34. The method of claim 29, further comprising modifying a plurality of service class categories of service providers using information from a keypad.
- 35. The method of claim 29, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 36. The method of claim 29, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 37. A method by which a communication device locates a wireless service provider in multi-service provider environment, comprising:examining a plurality of frequencies in a predetermined order specified by a frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located; and identifying a service class category of service provider from a plurality of service class categories and identifying an associated alphanumeric indicator for the acceptable service provider; and further comprising determining whether a last frequency used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule; and if the last frequency used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 38. The method of claim 37, further comprising displaying the alphanumeric indicator of the acceptable service provider.
- 39. The method of claim 37, further comprising modifying the alphanumeric indictor associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 40. The method of claim 37, further comprising modifying the alphanumeric indictor associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers using information from a keypad.
- 41. The method of claim 37, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 42. The method of claim 37, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 43. A wireless communication device that locates a wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment, comprising:a memory for storing a frequency search schedule having a plurality of frequencies in a predetermined order; and for storing information on a plurality of categories of service providers; and a processor for examining the plurality of frequencies in the order specified by the frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located; and for identifying a service class category of service provider for the acceptable service provider; and wherein the processor determines whether a last frequency used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule; and if the last frequency used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 44. The device of claim 43, wherein the processor further compares information broadcast on a control channel with the stored information on a plurality of service class categories of service providers.
- 45. The device of claim 44, wherein the processor compares service identifier codes.
- 46. The device of claim 44, wherein the processor compares service operator codes.
- 47. The device of claim 43, wherein the information on a plurality of service class categories of service providers is modified using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 48. The device of claim 43, wherein the information on a plurality of service class categories of service providers is modified using information from a keypad.
- 49. The device of claim 43, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 50. The device of claim 43, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
- 51. A wireless communication device that locates a wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment, comprising:a memory for (1) storing a frequency search schedule having a plurality of frequencies in a predetermined order; (2) storing information for a plurality of categories of service providers; and (3) storing alphanumeric indicators associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers; and a processor for (1) examining the plurality of frequencies in the order specified by the frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located and (2) identifying a category of service provider and an associated alphanumeric indicator for the acceptable service provider; and wherein the processor determines whether a last frequency used by the communication device has an acceptable service provider before examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule; and if the last frequency used by the communication device does not have an acceptable service provider, examining frequencies in the frequency search schedule until a frequency having an acceptable service provider is located.
- 52. The device of claim 51, further comprising a display for displaying the alphanumeric indicator of the acceptable service provider.
- 53. The device of claim 51, wherein the alphanumeric indicator associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers is modified using information transmitted over a wireless interface.
- 54. The device of claim 51, wherein the alphanumeric indicator associated with each of the plurality of categories of service providers is modified using information from a keypad.
- 55. The device of claim 51, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last deactivated.
- 56. The device of claim 51, wherein the last frequency used is a frequency that the communication device used for service registration when the communication device was last powered up.
