- 5. The network of claim 4 further comprising means for configuring each network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches to ignore address resolution protocols directed to said second common IP address from the communications network.
- 6. The network of claim 4 further comprising a network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches to respond to said second common IP address only when received from a LAN connected to another network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches.
- 7. A communication network having: i) a plurality of network switches, at least some of the network switches having routing capabilities, each network routing switch further having a unique internet protocol (IP) address, ii) a plurality of local area networks (LANs), each LAN having at least one communicating device with a unique IP address, each LAN further connected to a corresponding network switch, iii) a central router having a unique IP address, and iv) a switched network connected to the central router and to the plurality of network switches, said communicating network comprising:a first subnet comprising the central router, a set of selected network routing switches, and a set of selected communication devices; means for (i) assigning a common IP address and a common medium access control (MAC) address to the central router; (ii) means for assigning said common IP address and said common MAC address to each network switch in said set of selected network routing switches; and (iii) means for assigning said common IP address as a default gateway address to each communication device in said set of selected communication devices.
- 8. The network of claim 7 further wherein:the central router is configured to ignore address resolution protocols directed to said common IP address from the communications network; and wherein each network switch in said set of selected network routing switches is configured to ignore address resolution protocols directed to said common IP address from the communications network.
- 9. The network of claim 7 wherein:the central router is configured to respond to said common IP address only when received from a LAN connected to another network switch in said set of selected network routing switches; and wherein each network switch in said set of selected network routing switches is configured to respond to said common IP address only when received from a LAN connected to another network switch in said set of selected network routing switches.
- 10. The network of claim 7 further comprising:a second subnet, said second subnet comprising the central router, a second set of selected network routing switches, and a second set of selected communication devices; further including means for (i) assigning a second common IP address and a second common MAC address to the central router; (ii) assigning said second common IP address and said second common MAC address to each network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches; and (iii) assigning said second common IP address as a gateway address to each communication device in said second set of selected communication devices.
- 11. The network of claim 10 further wherein each network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches is configured to ignore address resolution protocols directed to said second common IP address from the communications network.
- 12. The network of claim 10 further wherein each network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches is configured to respond to said second common IP address only when received from a LAN connected to another network switch in said second set of selected network routing switches.
- 13. A method of configuring a communication network having a plurality of network routing switches, each network routing switch having a unique internet protocol (IP) address, a plurality of local area networks (LANs), each LAN having at least one communication device having a unique IP address, each LAN further connected to a corresponding network routing switch, comprising:defining a subnet, said subnet comprising a set of selected network routing switches connected to selected LAN segments, and and a set of selected communication devices, said selected communication devices connected to said selected LAN segments; assigning a common IP address to each of the network routing switches in said set of selected network routing switches; and, assigning said common IP address as a gateway address to said selected LAN segments connected to said selected communication devices.
- 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising:assigning a common medium access control (MAC) address to each of the network routing switches in said set of selected network routing switches.
- 15. The method of claim 13 further comprising:ignoring an ARP packet addressed to said common IP address and received by a routing switch in said set of selected network routing switches from a LAN segment which is not one of said selected LAN segments.
- 16. The method of claim 13 further comprising:forwarding by each of the communication devices in said set of selected communication devices a packet addressed to said common IP address onto said selected LAN segments, and onto no other LAN segments.
