Claims
- 1. A system for dispensing of packaged pharmaceuticals, comprising:
a plurality of racks each having a plurality of columns, each rack being slideably mounted in a housing; each column receiving a plurality of packaged pharmaceuticals; a dispensing mechanism for each of the columns; and a control system for individually addressing each of the dispensing mechanism for dispensing a packaged pharmaceutical.
- 2. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
a code reader coupled with a computer and operable to read a code on the packaged pharmaceutical.
- 3. The system of claim 2 further comprising:
a printer connected to the computer operable to print a label, the label including prescription information on the pharmaceutical.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the dispensing mechanism is a dual valve dispenser.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the dispenser is a gravity fed drug rack.
- 6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a pusher for pushing the dispensed packaged pharmaceutical from the dispense location.
- 7. The system of claim 1, where in the pharmaceutical is for a syringe and is stored in a vial in the column of the rack, and the dispensing mechanism dispenses a vial for further processing.
- 8. The system of claim 7 further comprising:
a code reader coupled with the computer and operable to read a code on a vial of the medicament; and a printer connected to the computer operable to print a label, the label including prescription information for the syringe.
- 9. The system of claim 8, wherein the code on the package includes a barcode.
- 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the code reader includes a bar code reader.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the label includes a picture of the prescribed pharmaceutical.
- 12. A system for dispensing of a packaged pharmaceuticals, comprising:
at least one rack having a plurality of columns, the rack being slideably mounted in a housing; each column receiving a plurality of packaged pharmaceuticals; the rack including an electronic controller that receives request signals and generates dispense signals and a data entry device operatively linked to the rack for entering patient information corresponding to a patient; and a dispensing mechanism for each of the columns linked to the electronic controller for dispensing a packaged pharmaceutical.
- 13. The system of claim 12 further comprising:
a centralized control facility remote from and operatively linked to the rack, the control facility being operative to match the patient information corresponding to a particular patient with a prescription for a pharmaceutical and to transmit a request signal when a corresponding match is identified; and a database operatively associated with the centralized control facility that stores information relating to a least one authorized prescription, to initiate dispensing by transmitting a signal representative of the patient information to the centralized control facility, such that the rack dispenses a packaged pharmaceutical.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the database stores a unique transaction code corresponding to each respective authorized prescription.
- 15. The system of claim 12, wherein the packaged pharmaceutical is in a vial received in a column of the rack, and the dispensing mechanism dispenses a vial for further processing.
- 16. The system of claim 15 further comprising:
a code reader coupled with the computer and operable to read a code on a vial of the pharmaceutical; and a printer connected to the computer operable to print a label, the label including prescription information for a finished pharmaceutical product.
- 17. The system of claim 16, wherein the code on the package includes a barcode.
- 18. The system of claim 17, wherein the code reader includes a bar code reader.
- 19. The system of claim 16, wherein the finished pharmaceutical product is in a syringe.
- 20. The system of claim 16 wherein the finished pharmaceutical product is in a bag.
- 21. A system for dispensing of pharmaceuticals, comprising:
a dispenser that stores a plurality of medicaments each for a pharmaceuticals, the dispenser including an electronic controller that receives request signals and generates dispense signals and a data entry device operatively linked to the dispenser for entering patient information corresponding to a patient; a control facility operatively linked to the dispenser, the control facility being operative to match the patient information corresponding to a particular patient with a prescription for a pharmaceutical and to transmit a request signal when a corresponding match is identified; and a database operatively associated with the control facility that stores information relating to at least one authorized prescription, the dispenser being operative, in response to entry of the patient information, to initiate dispensing by transmitting a signal representative of the patient information to the control facility, such that the dispenser dispenses a packaged medicament for the pharmaceutical corresponding with the prescription.
- 22. The system of claim 21, wherein the database stores a unique transaction code corresponding to each respective authorized prescription.
- 23. The system of claim 21, where in the medicament for the pharmaceutical is stored in a vial and the dispenser dispenses a vial for further processing.
- 24. The system of claim 21 wherein the control facility is centralized and the system has a network of remote dispenser.
- 25. The system of claim 21, wherein the dispenser is a gravity-fed drug rack.
- 26. The system of claim 21 further comprising:
a code reader coupled with the computer and operable to read a code on a vial of the medicament; and a printer connected to the computer operable to print a label, the label including prescription information on the pharmaceutical.
- 27. The system of claim 26, wherein the code on the vial includes a barcode.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the code reader includes a bar code reader.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the label includes a picture of the prescribed pharmaceutical.
- 30. The system of claim 21, wherein the plurality of prepackaged pharmaceuticals are in the form of at least one of box, bottle, bag, unit-of-use packaging, liquids and syringes.
- 31. The system of claim 21, wherein the data entry device comprises at least one of a numeric keypad and a magnetic card reader.
- 32. A method of dispensing of a pharmaceuticals for a patient at a selected drug dispensing unit, comprising the steps of:
receiving at a control facility a request to supply a patient with at least one packaged pharmaceutical containing a drug prescribed by a physician; reading patient information received during the receiving step to ensure the patient is authorized to receive the drug prescribed; dispensing a pharmaceutical from a storage unit; preparing the pharmaceuticals with the pharmaceutical dispensed from the storage unit.
- 33. The method of claim 32, further including a step of identifying the amount of delay permissible before a patient must receive a drug identified in a request received during the receiving step.
- 34. The method of claim 32, comprising the step of storing an inventory of frequently prescribed pharmaceuticals in the storage unit.
- 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the pharmaceutical stored during the storing step are in a form selected from the group consisting of solids, powder, gel, cream, and liquids.
- 36. The method of claim 34 wherein the pharmaceutical stored during the storing step in the storage unit are in a gravity-fed drug dispenser rack.
- 37. The method of claim 32, further comprising the step of inventorying the parenteral pharmaceutical retained in the storing step by monitoring the dispensing of the pharmaceutical from the storage rack.
- 38. The method of claim 32 further comprising the step of using a code reader coupled with the computer and operable to read a code on a unit of use of the prescribed pharmaceutical
- 39. The method of claim 38, wherein the code on the package includes a barcode and the code reader includes a bar code reader.
- 40. The method of claim 38 further comprising the steps of:
printing a label representative of the prescription; and applying the label to the pharmaceutical.
- 41. The method of claim 40, wherein the label includes a picture of the prescribed pharmaceutical.
- 42. The method of claim 32 wherein the pharmaceutical dispensed for the patient is in a syringe.
- 43. A medicament-dispensing apparatus for filling a pharmaceutical product for a medicament, the apparatus comprising:
a prescription database including prescription data corresponding to a prescription to be filled including the medicament thereof; a computer including means for accessing the prescription database for retrieving prescription data therefrom corresponding to the parenteral product to be filled; an indicia-reading device coupled with the computer and operable to read indicia on a unit of use of a medicament and to generate unit of use data representative thereof, the unit of use data being representative of the medicament contained in the unit of use, the device being operable to provide the unit of use data to the computer, and the computer including means for comparing the unit of use data and the prescription data to determine consistency.
- 44. The apparatus of claim 43, further comprising:
a printer coupled with the computer and operable to print a prescription label representative of the parenteral product; and an attribute database including attribute data representative of at least one physical attribute of the medicament, the computer including means for accessing the attribute database and for retrieving attribute data therefrom corresponding to the pharmaceutical product and for activating the printer to print the prescription label with pharmaceutical product indicia thereon representative of at least one physical attribute of the pharmaceutical product.
- 45. The apparatus of claim 43, the container indicia including a bar code, the indicia-reading device including a bar code reader.
- 46. The apparatus of claim 43, the medicament indicia including at least one image of the prescription medicament.
- 47. The apparatus of claim 45, the prescription label being printed in a first language, the apparatus including a language database of language data representative of the prescription in a second language, the computer having means for accessing the language database and retrieving language data therefrom corresponding to a prescription, and for activating the printer to print a second prescription label in the second language.
- 48. The apparatus of claim 43, the indicia being a UPC code corresponding to one of the national drug code (NDC) number and the drug identification number (DIN) corresponding to the medicament, the computer being operable to determine one of the NDC number and DIN number from the indicia.
- 49. The apparatus of claim 43 wherein the pharmaceutical product is in a syringe.
- 50. The apparatus of claim 43 wherein the pharmaceutical product is in a bag.
