Claims
- 1. A method of supplemental control of a segment of a multiple segment fiber glass bushing controlled by a bushing primary controller, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a supplemental controller including a heating and cooling circuit;
- coupling said heating and cooling circuit to said segment of said fiber glass bushing;
- generating a control signal for said segment of said fiber glass bushing;
- determining whether said control signal commands heating or cooling of said segment of said fiber glass bushing; and
- operating said heating and cooling circuit to heat only said segment of said fiber glass bushing by connecting supplemental current to said segment of said fiber glass bushing when said control signal commands heating and cool only said segment of said fiber glass bushing by diverting current around said segment of said fiber glass bushing when said control signal commands cooling.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of determining whether said control signal commands heating or cooling of said segment of said fiber glass bushing comprises the step of comparing said control signal to a threshold.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of generating a control signal for said segment of said fiber glass bushing comprises the steps of:
- determining the temperature of said segment of said fiber glass bushing; and
- utilizing the determined temperature of said segment of said fiber glass bushing in a process controller to generate said control signal.
- 4. A method of supplemental control of a segment of a multiple segment fiber glass bushing controlled by a bushing primary controller, said method comprising the steps of:
- coupling a heating and cooling circuit to said segment of said fiber glass bushing, said heating and cooling circuit is controlled to conduct portions of cycles of ac electrical energy to said segment of said fiber glass bushing for heating and to conduct portions of cycles of ac electrical energy from said segment of a fiber glass bushing for cooling;
- generating a control signal for said segment of said fiber glass bushing;
- determining whether said control signal commands said heating or said cooling of said segment of said fiber glass bushing; and
- operating said heating and cooling circuit to heat said segment of said fiber glass bushing by connecting supplemental current to said segment of said fiber glass bushing when said control signal commands heating and cool said segment of said fiber glass bushing by diverting current around said segment of said fiber glass bushing when said control signal commands cooling, wherein said step of operating said heating and cooling circuit to heat and cool said segment of said fiber glass bushing comprises the steps of:
- determining current flowing in said heating and cooling circuit,
- generating a current flow signal corresponding to the current flowing in said heating and cooling circuit,
- combining said current flow signal and said control signal to generate a control error signal,
- determining a conduction control signal for said heating and cooling circuit in response to said control error signal, and
- operating said heating and cooling circuit in response to said conduction control signal.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein said heating and cooling circuit comprises a first current control switch for connecting supplemental current to said segment of said fiber glass bushing and a second current control switch for diverting current around said segment of said fiber glass bushing, and said step of operating said heating and cooling circuit in response to said conduction control signal comprises the step of controlling an onset of current conduction through said first and second current control switched for controlling heating and cooling of said segment of said fiber glass bushing, respectively.
