Claims
- 1. A method for disproportionating an ethylenically unsaturated compound or a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated compounds, which comprises:
- reacting at a temperature of from -30.degree. C. to +300.degree. C. a compound (1) having the formula:
- R.sup.1 R.sup.2 C=CR.sup.3 X (1)
- wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-15 alkyl, alkenyl or X; R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-3 alkyl, and X is a group having the formula:
- --CR.sup.4.sub.2).sub.a Y(a.gtoreq.1)
- wherein Y is CN and R.sup.4 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1-15 alkyl and all of the R.sup.4 groups are not required to be the same, with the proviso that when R.sup.1 is alkenyl, the double bond of the group is not in a position which is conjugate to the double bond in formula (1),
- or a mixture of said compound (1) and a compound (2) selected from the group consisting of 1,4-polybutadiene; 1,2-polybutadiene; a compound having the formula,
- R.sup.14 R.sup.15 C=CR.sup.16 R.sup.17
- wherein R.sup.14 and R.sup.16 are hydrogen or C.sub.1-3 alkyl and R.sup.15 and R.sup.17 represent hydrogen, C.sub.1-15 alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, or halohydrocarbon groups, with the proviso that when R.sup.15 and R.sup.17 are halohydrocarbon groups, no sites of carbon-carbon unsaturation exist at a position conjugate to the double bond; and a cyclic compound having the formula: ##STR4## wherein --Z--represents --CH.sub.2).sub.b or --CH.sub.2).sub.c CH.dbd.CH-- --(CH.sub.2).sub.d (b.gtoreq.1, c.gtoreq.1, d.gtoreq.1), the cyclic compound being present in an excess amount sufficient to prevent polymer formation,
- with a catalyst consisting essentially of a combination of at least one member selected from the group consisting of the halides, oxyhalides, carbonyl complexes, alkoxides, oxyalkoxides and alkoxyhalides of tungsten, molybdenum or rhenium with (CH.sub.3).sub.1.5 AlCl.sub.1.5, wherein the atomic ratio of Me:Al in the catalyst, wherein Me is W, Mo or Re, is within the range from 1/1 to 1/15.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the compound (1) is selected from the group consisting of 9-octadecenenitrile, 6-octadecenenitrile, 3-butenenitrile, 1,4-dicyano-2-butene, 4-pentenenitrile, octadecenedinitrile, 9,12-octadecadienenitrile, 9-decenenitrile, and 10-undecenenitrile.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the compound (2) is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 2-butene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 3-hexene, 3-heptene, 1-octene, 2-octene, 4-octene, 1-decene, 5-decene, 1-pentadecene, allylbenzene, p-chlorostyrene, 1,7-octadiene, 1,9-decadiene, oleyl chloride, and 4-methyl-1-pentene.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the compound (2) is selected from the group consisting of cyclooctene, cycloheptene, cyclododecene, cyclododecatriene, cyclopentene, cyclobutene, 1,5-cyclooctadiene, norbornene and dicyclopentadiene.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the tungsten, molybdenum or rhenium component of the catalyst is selected from the group consisting of WCl.sub.6, MoCl.sub.5, MoCl.sub.3, ReCl.sub.5, W(CO).sub.6, W(OC.sub.6 H.sub.5).sub.6 and Mo (OC.sub.2 H.sub.5).sub.2 Cl.sub.3.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the tungsten, molybdenum or rhenium component of the catalyst is selected from the group consisting of WCl.sub.6, MoCl.sub.5 and Mo (OC.sub.2 H.sub.5).sub.2 Cl.sub.3.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the catalyst components are used in such a ratio that the atomic ratio Me/Al falls within the range from 1/2 to 1/6.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the reaction temperature is in the range from -10.degree. C. to +200.degree. C.
