Claims
- 1. A surgical system for creating a virtual electrode for the ablation of tissue and for selected protection of tissue during an ablation therapy, the surgical system comprising:
a radiofrequency alternating electric current source; a radiofrequency ablating fluid source; a surgical instrument connected to the current source and connected to the fluid source for delivering a fluid and a current to a first portion of tissue to be ablated; a protective fluid source; and a delivery instrument connected to the protective fluid source for delivery of a protective fluid to a second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired.
- 2. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the radiofrequency of the electrical current source and the radiofrequency of the ablating fluid source are in the range of about 3 kilohertz to 300 gigahertz.
- 3. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the surgical instrument comprises a single needle.
- 4. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the surgical instrument comprises a plurality of needles.
- 5. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the delivery instrument comprises a single needle.
- 6. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the delivery instrument comprises a plurality of needles.
- 7. A surgical apparatus for creating a virtual electrode for the ablation of tissue and for selected protection of tissue during an ablation therapy, the surgical system comprising:
a surgical instrument for delivering a radiofrequency ablating fluid and a radiofrequency alternating electric current to a first portion of tissue to be ablated; and a delivery instrument for delivering a protective fluid to a second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired.
- 8. The surgical system of claim 7, wherein the radiofrequency of the electrical current source and the radiofrequency of the ablating fluid source are in the range of about 3 kilohertz to 300 gigahertz.
- 9. The surgical system of claim 7, wherein the surgical instrument comprises a single needle.
- 10. The surgical system of claim 7, wherein the surgical instrument comprises a plurality of needles.
- 11. The surgical system of claim 7, wherein the delivery instrument comprises a single needle.
- 12. The surgical system of claim 7, wherein the delivery instrument comprises a plurality of needles.
- 13. A method of creating a virtual electrode for the ablation of tissue and for selected protection of tissue during an ablation therapy, the method of comprising:
providing a radiofrequency ablating fluid to a first portion of tissue to be ablated; providing a radiofrequency alternating electric current to the first portion of tissue to be ablated; and providing a protective fluid to a second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of providing a protective fluid further comprises:
providing a sugar solution consisting of water and dextrose to the second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired.
- 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the step providing a protective fluid further comprises:
providing a sugar solution comprising water and sucrose to the second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired.
- 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of providing the protective a protective fluid further comprises:
providing a biocompatible non-conductive solution to a second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired.
- 17. The method of claim 13, wherein the steps of providing a radiofrequency ablating fluid and providing a radio frequency alternating electric current further comprises:
providing the radiofrequency ablating fluid and the radiofrequency alternating electric current via a single needle.
- 18. The method of claim 13, wherein the steps of providing a radiofrequency ablating fluid and providing a radiofrequency alternating electric current further comprises:
providing the radiofrequency ablating fluid and the radiofrequency alternating electric current via a plurality of needles.
- 19. The method of claim 13, wherein the step providing a protective fluid further comprises:
providing a protective fluid to the second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired via a single needle.
- 20. The method of claim 13, wherein the step providing a protective fluid further comprises:
providing a protective fluid to the second portion of tissue whose ablation is not desired via a plurality of needles.
