Claims
- 1. A ceramic fiber derived from a resinous organosilicon polymer, the fiber having:
- a composition consisting essentially of silicon, nitrogen and carbon;
- an amorphous, non-crystalline structure; and a density greater than 2.5 g/cc.
- 2. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 1 wherein the fiber has an elastic modulus of at least 210 GPa and a tensile strength of at least 1600 MPa.
- 3. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 1 wherein the fiber is substantially devoid of metal oxide sintering aids.
- 4. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 2 wherein the fiber is substantially devoid of metal oxide sintering aids.
- 5. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 1 wherein the density is greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 6. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 2 wherein the density is greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 7. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 3 wherein the density is greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 8. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 4 wherein the density is greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 9. A ceramic fiber as recited in claim 1 wherein the fiber also contains oxygen.
- 10. A ceramic fiber tow composed of a plurality of filaments each having a substantially circular cross section, said filaments each having a diameter in the range of about 5 to 25 micrometers;
- a composition consisting essentially of silicon, nitrogen and carbon;
- an amorphous, non-crystalline structure; and a density greater than 2.5 g/cc.
- 11. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 10 wherein each filament has an elastic modulus of at least 210 GPa and a tensile strength of at least 1600 MPa.
- 12. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 10 wherein each filament is substantially devoid of metal oxide sintering aids.
- 13. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 11 wherein each filament is substantially devoid of metal oxide sintering aids.
- 14. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 10 wherein each filament has a density greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 15. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 11 wherein each filament has a density greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 16. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 12 wherein each filament has a density greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 17. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 13 wherein each filament has a density greater than 2.7 g/cc.
- 18. A ceramic fiber tow as recited in claim 10 wherein each filament also contains oxygen.
