Claims
- 1. A method for determining the crude fat content of a foodstuff which comprises:providing a plurality of samples of a foodstuff and encapsulating said samples in separate filtering chambers and exposing said samples to vapors of a strong acid or base under conditions sufficient to breakdown the bonds which exist between the fat and matrix of said samples; exposing said encapsulated samples to organic solvent in an extraction vessel for sufficient time to extract substantially all of said fat contained in the encapsulated samples, with the balance of the sample components remaining encapsulated; rinsing the encapsulated samples with the solvent to remove any residual fat in the encapsulated samples; and weighing the encapsulated samples and determining the fat content of each sample by the loss of weight of the sample.
- 2. The method of claim 1 which said first treatment is carried out using hydrochloric acid.
- 3. The method of claim 1 which said first treatment is carried out using ammonium hydroxide.
