Claims
- 1. A method for drying a microbially derived polysaccharide, the method comprising:
contacting an aqueous medium containing said polysaccharide with a sorbent, said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue, whereby said polysaccharide and at least a portion of the water in said aqueous solution are sorbed by said sorbent thereby forming a composite; and drying said composite to a moisture content of less than 20%.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, said sorbent comprising spent corn germ.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, said polysaccharide comprising a β-glucan.
- 4. A method according to claim 3, said polysaccharide comprising scleroglucan.
- 5. A composite product comprising the dried composite prepared by the method of claim 1.
- 6. A composite product comprising the dried composite prepared by the method of claim 2.
- 7. A composite product comprising the dried composite prepared by the method of claim 3.
- 8. A composite product comprising the dried composite prepared by the method of claim 4.
- 9. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 5 and at least one additional animal nutrient.
- 10. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 6 and at least one additional animal nutrient.
- 11. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 7 and at least one additional animal nutrient.
- 12. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 8 and at least one additional animal nutrient.
- 13. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 5.
- 14. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 6.
- 15. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 7.
- 16. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 8.
- 17. A method of obtaining a microbially derived polysaccharide comprising:
providing a composite material that includes a sorbent containing a polysaccharide gum, sorbed therewithin; said composite material having a moisture content of less than 20% said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue, and hydrating said composite material.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said the sorbent comprises spent grain germ.
- 19. A method according to claim 17, wherein said polysaccharide is a β-glucan.
- 20. A method according to claim 19, wherein said polysaccharide is scleroglucan.
- 21. A method for drying a microorganism comprising;
providing an aqueous medium containing said microorganism and a sorbent, said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue; sorbing at least portion of said aqueous solution to thereby from a composite; and drying said composite to a moisture content of less than 20%.
- 22. A method according to claim 21, said sorbent comprising spent grain germ.
- 23. A method according to claim 22, said microorganism being selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, Enterococcus, Propionibacterium, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces.
- 24. A method according to claim 23, wherein said microorganism comprises a Lactobacillus species.
- 25. A method according to claim 21, wherein said composite contains at least 102 CFU/g reconstitutable microorganisms upon drying.
- 26. A method according to claim 21, wherein said composite contains at least 103 CFU/g reconstitutable microorganisms upon drying.
- 27. A method according to claim 21, said aqueous solution including a film-forming material.
- 28. A method according to claim 21, said method further including the step of coating said dried composite with a film.
- 29. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 21.
- 30. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 22.
- 31. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 23.
- 32. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 24.
- 33. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 25.
- 34. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 27.
- 35. A composite product prepared in accordance with the method of claim 28.
- 36. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 29 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 37. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 30 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 38. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 31 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 39. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 32 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 40. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 33 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 41. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 34 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 42. An animal feed comprising the composite product of claim 35 and an additional animal nutrient.
- 43. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 29.
- 44. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 30.
- 45. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 31.
- 46. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 32.
- 47. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 33.
- 48. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 34.
- 49. A method for providing nutrition to an animal comprising feeding the animal the composite product of claim 35.
- 50. A method for obtaining a microorganism, comprising:
providing a composite material that includes a sorbent, said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue and a microorganism, said composite having a moisture content of less than 20%; and hydrating said composite material.
- 51. A method according to claim 50, said sorbent comprising spent grain germ.
- 52. A method according to claim 50, said microorganism being selected group consisting of Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, Enterococcus, Propionibacterium, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces.
- 53. A method according to claim 52, wherein said microorganism comprises a Lactobacillus species.
- 54. A method according to claim 50, said microorganism being obtained in an amount of 102 CFU/g of composite material.
- 55. A method for obtaining oil from an aqueous medium containing of an oil-producing microorganism, the method comprising:
sorbing said microorganism in a sorbent to thereby from a composite, the sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue; drying said composite; and obtaining oil from said composite.
- 56. A method according to claim 55, said sorbent comprising spent grain germ.
- 57. A method according to claim 56, said oil comprising an Ω-n fatty acid, wherein n ranges from 1 to 6.
