Claims
- 1. A method of electrostatically depositing a medicament powder upon a selected region of a surface of a substrate, the method comprising the steps of:
- selectively accumulating an amount of a (+) or (-) first electrostatic charge at the selected surface region;
- exposing the surface to a cloud of particles of the medicament, wherein particles from the cloud electrostatically and selectively adhere to said selected surface region of the substrate to deposit on the selected surface region a dose of the medicament.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of accumulated electrostatic charge is a measured amount and wherein ions are propelled toward the selected region to accumulate the electrostatic charge.
- 3. The method of claim 2, comprising sampling of the particles of the cloud of particles to determine their average charge to mass ratio.
- 4. The method of claim 2, further comprising:
- controlling the amount of particles that adhere to the selected surface region by controlling the amount of electrostatic charge accumulated at the selected region.
- 5. The method of claim 2, wherein the method comprises:
- positioning an ion emitter proximate to the selected surface region of the substrate;
- activating the emitter to propel the ions from the emitter to the selected surface region so that said selected surface region becomes electrostatically charged;
- deactivating the emitter when the measured amount of electrostatic charge has accumulated upon the substrate; and
- generating the particle cloud proximate said selected surface region.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the activating and deactivating steps further comprise the step of controlling a signal source that drives the ion emitter.
- 7. The method of claim 5, further comprising the steps of measuring an ion current flowing between the emitter and the substrate on which the selected surface is found to determine when the measured amount of electrostatic charge has accumulated at the selected surface.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the measuring step further comprises the steps of integrating the ion current and comparing the integrated ion current value to a threshold value that is indicative of the measured amount of accumulated electrostatic charge.
- 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising triboelectrically charging the particles such that the charge polarity of the particles is opposite the polarity of the first charge.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the triboelectric charging generates a substantially uniform charge-to-mass ratio within the particles.
- 11. A method of manufacturing a pharmaceutical substrate with medicament particles deposited on selected surface regions thereon, comprising accumulating a first electrostatic charge on either (i) the selected surface regions or (ii) on non-selected surface regions distinct from the selected surface regions, and selectively electrostatically adhering the particles on the selected surface regions to deposit on each of the selected surface regions a dose of the medicament.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the substrate comprises multiple elements having said selected surface regions thereon, wherein the elements are selected from the group consisting of tablets, capsules and suppositories.
- 13. The method of claim 11, comprising electrostatically depositing the medicament particles on a substrate that is an inhaler substrate.
