Claims
- 1. A method for fabricating a field emission display package comprising:
- providing a first plate and a second plate;
- depositing a flowable seal material on the first plate, the seal material comprising a non-planar surface;
- tacking the second plate to the seal material to at least partially define a space between the first plate and the second plate, and with the non-planar surface forming at least one opening to the space;
- evacuating the space through the opening; and
- heating the seal material to close the opening and seal the space.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the non-planar surface includes at least one area of increased height.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the non-planar surface includes at leased one raised protrusion.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the seal material comprises pre fired glass frit.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the seal material comprises a first material and a second material.
- 6. A method for fabricating a field emission display package comprising:
- providing a first plate and a second plate;
- forming a seal material on the first plate, the seal material comprising a pre fired glass frit having at least one area of increased height;
- tacking the second plate to the seal material, with the first plate, the second plate and the seal material at least partially defining a space therebetween, and with the area of increased height forming an opening to the space;
- evacuating the space using the opening; and
- heating the seal material to close the opening and seal the space.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the evacuating and heating steps are performed simultaneously.
- 8. A method for fabricating a field emission display package comprising:
- providing a first plate and a second plate;
- forming a seal on the first plate, the seal comprising at least one area of increased height comprising a different material than a remainder of the seal;
- tacking the second plate to the seal with the first plate, the second plate, and the seal at least partially defining a space therebetween, and with the area of increased height forming an opening to the space;
- evacuating the space using the opening; and
- heating the seal to close the opening and seal the space.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the seal comprises a first pre fired glass frit material and the area of increased height comprises a second pre fired glass frit material.
- 10. A method for fabricating a field emission display package comprising:
- providing a first plate and a second plate;
- forming a seal ring on the first plate, the seal ring comprising at least one area of increased height;
- tacking the first plate to the second plate with the seal ring, the first plate, and the second plate at least partially defining a space therebetween, and with the area of increased height providing a flow path to the space;
- evacuating the space using the flow path; and
- heating the seal ring to close the flow path and seal the space.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the area of increased height comprises a different material than a remainder of the seal ring.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the seal ring comprises a pre fired glass frit.
- 13. The method of claim 10 wherein the seal ring comprises indium.
- 14. A field emission display package comprising:
- a first plate;
- a second plate tacked to the first plate;
- a vacuum space between the first plate and the second plate;
- a plurality of field emission display components mounted within the space; and
- a seal tacking the first plate to the second plate configured to seal the space, the seal comprising at least one area configured to initially form an opening for evacuating the space and then flowed into a remainder of the seal to close the opening.
- 15. The package of claim 14 further comprising a getter within the vacuum space.
- 16. The package of claim 14 wherein the area comprises a compressed protrusion.
- 17. The package of claim 14 wherein the area comprises a compressed protrusion formed of a different material than the remainder of the seal.
- 18. A field emission display package comprising:
- a first plate;
- a second plate tacked to the first plate to form a space therebetween;
- a plurality of field emission display components mounted to the first plate and to the second plate; and
- a seal tacking the first plate to the second plate configured to seal the space, the seal comprising a flowable material having at least one compressed area initially having an increased height relative to a remainder of the seal for forming an opening for evacuating the space.
- 19. The package of claim 18 wherein the area comprises a first material and the remainder of the seal comprises a second material.
- 20. The package of claim 18 wherein the area comprises a first glass frit material and the remainder of the seal comprises a second glass frit material.
- 21. A field emission display package comprising:
- a first plate;
- a second plate tacked to the first plate to form a space therebetween;
- a plurality of field emission display components mounted within the space; and
- a seal tacking the first plate to the second plate, the seal comprising a first flowable material configured to initially form an opening for evacuating the space and a second flowable material configured to seal the space.
- 22. The package of claim 21 wherein the first flowable material comprises a first glass frit material and the second flowable material comprises a second glass frit material.
