Claims
- 1. A method for continuously removing biological waste products from an aqueous medium in a filtering system located above an aquarium tank comprising a filter tank, a biological filtering medium adapted to culture bacterial useful in decomposing and detoxifying biological waste products into harmless substances and a siphon system, the method comprising the following steps in alternating sequence:
- a. passing an aqueous medium to be filtered into the filter tank, such that the aqueous medium fills the filter tank in such a manner to associate the aqueous medium with the filtering medium; and
- b. creating a wave-like action in the aquarium tank by draining the water rapidly from the filter tank, the draining water being initiated by the action of the siphon system.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 comprising prefiltering the aqueous medium prior to passing the aqueous medium into the filter tank, such that the prefiltering traps detritus particles and prevents them from entering the filter tank.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 comprising passing the aqueous medium through a filtering medium selected from the group consisting of calcarous material, aqueous gravel, synthetic floss and sand.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the filtering medium is sand.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the bacteria are aerobic bacteria.
- 6. The method according to claim 1 further comprising the following step:
- c) terminating the action of the siphon system by means of a siphon break, the siphon break being in association with the siphon system, wherein the siphon break draws air into the siphon, resulting in a rapid, positive termination of the siphon action.
- 7. In an aquarium tank comprising aquarium water, a method for filtering the aquarium water in a filtering system comprising a filter tank, a filtering medium and a siphon system, the method comprising introducing the aquarium water to the filtering system, such that the aquarium water associates with the filter medium, wherein the filter medium is a biological filter medium comprising beneficial bacterial useful in decomposing waste material in the aquarium water, wherein the aquarium water fills the filtering system to a level sufficient to purge air from the siphon resulting in the activation of the siphon, causing the aquarium water to drain rapidly through the filter medium in an opposite direction thereby creating wave-like action in the aquarium tank.
