Claims
- 1. A method for hemofiltering blood from a subject in need of such treatment which comprises:
(a) admixing blood from said subject and a non-isosmotic diluent, thereby producing a blood-diluent mixture.
- 2. The method of claim 1 which comprises:
(a) retaining said blood-diluent mixture in a mixing chamber for a predetermined period of time; and (b) conducting said blood-diluent mixture through a means for ultrafiltering blood.
- 3. The method of claim 2 which comprises
(a) returning said hemofiltered blood-diluent mixture to said patient; and (b) repeating steps (a) through (d) until a predetermined level of urea, creatinine and phosphate have been cleared from said blood.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said non-isosmotic diluent comprises an acetate solution.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said non-isosmotic diluent comprises a bicarbonate solution.
- 6. A hemofiltration apparatus which comprises:
means for pumping blood from a subject to a mixing and detention chamber; means for pumping diluent fluid from a diluent fluid reservoir to said mixing and detention chamber; said mixing and detention chamber in fluid connection with said blood pumping means and said diluent fluid pumping means; means for homogeneously dispersing said blood in said diluent fluid in said mixing and detention chamber; and a hemofiltering means connected to said mixing and detention chamber.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 4 which comprises an ultrafiltrate waste drainage line in fluid communication with said hemofiltering means.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 4 which comprises a backpressure valve in fluid communication with said hemofiltering means.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 4 which comprises a controlling means operably connected to said blood pumping means, said diluent pumping means, and said backpressure valve.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 4 which comprises a bubble removal device in fluid communication with said hemofiltering means.
