Claims
- 1. Method of decomposing hydroperoxides which comprises contacting a hydroperoxide with a catalyst, comprising an iron, manganese, cobalt or ruthenium metal complex having the following structural formula: ##STR4## where M comprises iron, manganese, cobalt or ruthenium and (a) R.sup.6 is hydrogen or haloaryl, R.sup.3 is hydrogen or haloalkyl, but R.sup.6 and R.sup.3 are not both hydrogen, and where R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, halogen, nitro, cyano or halocarbyl, or (b) R.sup.3 and R.sup.6 are haloalkyl and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are halogen, or an oxo-bridged dimer of said composition, or an azide of said composition.
- 2. Method according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is hydrogen and R.sup.3 is haloalkyl.
- 3. Method according to claim 2 wherein R.sup.3 is perfluoroalkyl.
- 4. Method according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is haloaryl and R.sup.3 is hydrogen.
- 5. Method according to claim 4 wherein R.sup.6 is perfluoroaryl.
- 6. Method according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is pentafluorophenyl and R.sup.3 is trifluoromethyl.
- 7. Method according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.6 are haloalkyl and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are halogen.
- 8. Method according to claim 7 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.6 are perfluoroalkyl and said halogen is bromine.
- 9. Method according to claim 7 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.6 are perfluoroalkyl and said halogen is chlorine.
- 10. Method according to claim 1 wherein M is iron.
- 11. Method according to claim 10 wherein said iron is present as iron(III)halide.
- 12. Method according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst is said oxo-bridged dimer of said complex.
- 13. Method according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst is said azide of said complex.
- 14. Method according to claim 3 wherein said catalyst comprises (C.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 (CF.sub.3).sub.2 PFeN.sub.3, where P is a porphyrin ring.
- 15. Method according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst comprises (C.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 (CF.sub.3).sub.2 PFeCl.
- 16. Method according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst comprises (C.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 (CF.sub.3).sub.2 PFe!.sub.2 O.
