Claims
- 1. A method of installing a gasket having a first exposed pipe-engaging portion and a second portion which is anchored within a peripheral wall of an opening in a poured-in-place concrete wall, said method comprising the steps of:
- (i) erecting a form including an inner wall and an outer wall to define said poured-in-place concrete wall, said outer wall of said form having an opening in the region where said opening in said poured-in-place concrete wall is to be;
- (ii) providing an assembly of:
- (a) an inner mold disc having a central aperture, an inner peripheral rim and a radially outwardly extending flange,
- (b) said gasket, with one face of said first portion thereof abutting said inner peripheral rim of said inner mold disc and with its second portion extending radially outwardly, and
- (c) an outer mold disc having a central aperture, an inner flange abutting a second face of said first portion of said gasket, and an outer rim, such that said inner mold disc and said outer mold disc are assembled together about said gasket with their central apertures being aligned;
- (iii) suspending said assembly at a desired predetermined location between said inner and outer walls, where said opening in said poured-in-place concrete wall is to be, by means of a depending fixing bar, said fixing bar having an upper crown adapted to rest atop said outer wall of said form and a plurality of spaced apart apertures therein, said suspending being by resting said crown atop said outer wall of said form and by positioning said assembly at said desired predetermined location by passing bolt means through said aligned central apertures in said inner and outer mold discs and through a selected aperture in said fixing bar, said selected aperture also being aligned with said central apertures in said inner and outer mold discs, and securing said bolt means in place;
- (iv) in-filling the space between said inner and outer walls of said form with settable concrete material, so as to anchor said second portion of said gasket in said settable concrete material; and
- (v) after setting of said settable concrete material, removing said form and said inner and outer mold discs, so as to leave said first, exposed pipe-engaging portion of said gasket which is not embedded in said set concrete material projecting into said opening intended to receive a pipe.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said inner mold disc comprises a main dish-shaped central circular area provided with said central aperture and defined by an annular rim, said rim being coextensive with a radially inwardly extending portion, leading to an annular rim portion, leading in turn to said radially outwardly extending flange terminating in a dish-shaped terminal rim; and wherein said outer mold disc comprises a main central circular area, provided with said central aperture, said main central circular area adapted to coincide with said main dish-shaped circular area of said inner mold disc, said circular area being defined by an annular rim adapted to abut said annular rim of said inner mold disc, said annular rim being coextensive with a stepped portion which is adapted to abut said annular rim portion of said inner mold disc, said stepped portion being coextensive with an expansion flange, said expansion flange continuing as an intermediate rim and merging into said outer rim which terminates in a fascia.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said gasket comprises: a molded elastomeric circular gasket, the transverse cross-section of said gasket having:
- (a) a generally triangular head, having a forward face provided with an arcuate depression therein, and a sloping rear face;
- (b) a generally rectangular body integral with said generally triangular head; and
- (c) a generally L-shaped leg depending from said body and coextensive with said rear face of said body, said gasket being adapted for resiliently supporting a sewer pipe in said opening and thereby adapted to seal the space between the wall of said opening and the surface of said pipe when installed.
- 4. The method of installing a sealing element in the peripheral surface of an opening through a body of a concrete manhole wall, which method comprises the steps of:
- (i) installing, at a predetermined location between the inner and outer shells of a form for casting said concrete wall of said manhole, an assembly comprising:
- (a) an inner mold disc having a central aperture, an inner peripheral rim and a radially outwardly extending flange;
- (b) said sealing element, with one face of a first portion thereof abutting said inner peripheral rim of said inner mold disc and with a second portion thereof extending radially outwardly; and
- (c) an outer mold disc having a central aperture, an inner flange abutting a second face of said first portion of said sealing element, and an outer rim, said inner mold disc and said outer mold disc having been assembled together about said sealing element with their central apertures being aligned;
- (ii) suspending said assembly between said shells at said predetermined location by means of a depending fixing bar held to said outer shell and temporarily, but firmly, secured to said inner and outer mold discs, said fixing bar having an upper crown adapted to rest atop said outer shell of said form and a plurality of spaced apart apertures therein, said suspending being by passing bolt means through said resting said crown atop said outer shell of said form and by positioning said assembly at said predetermined location by aligned central apertures in said inner and outer mold discs and through a selected aperture in said fixing bar, said selected aperture also being aligned with said central apertures in said inner and outer mold discs, and securing said bolt means in place;
- (iii) pouring settable concrete material into the space between said inner and outer shells of said form so as to surround and enclose said assembly, and so as to surround and enclose those portions of said sealing element which are not received within said mold discs; and
- (iv) then removing said inner and outer shells of said form and separating and removing said inner and outer mold discs, thus leaving that portion of said sealing element which has not been embedded in said set concrete material projecting into said opening in said body of said concrete manhole wall.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said inner mold disc comprises, a main dish-shaped central circular area provided with said central aperture and defined by an annular rim, said rim being coextensive with a radially inwardly extending portion, leading to an annular rim portion, leading in turn to said radially outwardly extending flange terminating in a dish-shaped terminal rim; and wherein said outer mold disc comprises a main central circular area, provided with said central aperture, said main central circular area adapted to coincide with said main dish-shaped circular area of said inner mold disc, said circular area being defined by an annular rim adapted to abut said annular rim of said inner mold disc, said annular rim being coextensive with a stepped portion which is adapted to abut said annular rim portion of said inner mold disc, said stepped portion being coextensive with an expansion flange, said expansion flange continuing as an intermediate rim and merging into said outer rim which terminates in a fascia.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein said sealing element comprises: a molded elastomeric circular gasket, the transverse cross-section of said gasket having:
- (a) a generally triangular head, having a forward face provided with an arcuate depression therein, and a sloping rear face;
- (b) a generally rectangular body integral with said generally triangular head; and
- (c) a generally L-shaped leg depending from said body, said gasket being adapted for resiliently supporting a sewer pipe in said opening and thereby adapted to seal the space between the wall of said opening and the surface of said pipe when installed.
- 7. A method for the manufacture of a pre-cast portion of a concrete wall of an access pit for underground piping systems, said method comprising the steps of:
- (i) erecting a form including an inner wall and an outer wall to define said concrete wall, said outer wall of said form having an opening in the region where said opening in said pre-cast portion of said concrete wall is to be;
- (ii) providing an assembly of:
- (a) an inner mold disc having a central aperture, an inner peripheral rim and a radially outwardly extending flange,
- (b) a gasket, with one face of a first portion thereof abutting said inner peripheral rim of said inner mold disc and with a second portion thereof extending radially outwardly, and
- (c) an outer mold disc having a central aperture, an inner flange abutting a second face of said first portion of said gasket, and an outer rim, such that said inner mold disc and said outer mold disc are assembled together about said gasket with their central apertures being aligned;
- (iii) positioning and fixing said assembly between said inner and outer walls, where said opening in said precast portion of said concrete wall is to be, by means of a depending fixing bar held to said outer wall, said fixing bar suspending said assembly at a desired predetermined location between said inner and outer walls, said fixing bar having an upper crown adapted to rest atop said outer wall of said form and a plurality of spaced apart apertures therein, said suspending being by resting said crown atop said outer wall of said form and by positioning said assembly at said predetermined location by passing bolt means through said aligned central apertures in said inner and outer mold discs and through a selected aperture in said fixing bar, said selected aperture also being aligned with said central apertures in said inner and outer mold discs, and securing said bolt means in place;
- (iv) pouring concrete between said form members and around said assembly; and
- (v) removing said form members and said inner and outer mold discs after said concrete has set.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said inner mold disc comprises a main dish-shaped central circular area provided with said central aperture and defined by an annular rim, said rim being coextensive with a radially inwardly extending portion, leading to an annular rim portion, leading in turn to said radially outwardly extending flange terminating in a dish-shaped terminal rim; and wherein said outer mold disc comprises a main central circular area, provided with said central aperture said main central circular area adapted to coincide with said main dish-shaped circular area of said inner mold disc, said circular area being defined by an annular rim adapted to abut said annular rim of said inner mold disc, said annular rim being coextensive with a stepped portion which is adapted to abut said annular rim portion of said inner mold disc, said stepped portion being coextensive with an expansion flange, said expansion flange continuing as an intermediate rim and merging into said outer rim which terminates in a fascia.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein said gasket comprises: a molded elastomeric circular gasket, the transverse cross-section of said gasket having:
- (a) a generally triangular head, having a forward face provided with an arcuate depression therein, and a sloping rear face;
- (b) a generally rectangular body integral with said generally triangular head; and
- (c) a generally L-shaped leg depending from said body, and coextensive with said rear face of said body, said gasket being adapted for resiliently supporting a sewer pipe in said opening and thereby adapted to seal the space between the wall of said opening and the surface of said pipe when installed.
