Claims
- 1. A method for installing a seal having a sealing lip over a first portion of a shaft for sealing against a second portion of said shaft, whereby said lip is prevented from contacting said first portion, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an annular seal having a mounting portion and a sealing lip portion having said sealing lip;
- (b) installing said seal over said first portion of said shaft including moving said sealing lip to a non-sealing configuration in which said sealing lip is out of contact with said shaft;
- (c) maintaining said sealing lip in said non-sealing configuration and out of contact with said first portion of said shaft during said installing step;
- (d) moving said sealing lip from said non-sealing configuration to its normal, sealing configuration in contact with said second portion of said shaft, after said seal has passed over said first portion and is over said second portion of said shaft,
- (e) wherein said seal is made of elastomeric material and wherein said step of moving said sealing lip to said non-sealing configuration includes stretching said sealing lip to a larger diameter than that of said first portion, and
- (f) wherein said stretching step includes folding said sealing lip portion over said mounting portion and locking said sealing lip portion to said mounting portion.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said locking step includes locking said sealing lip portion on the proximal end of said mounting portion.
- 3. The method according to claim 2 wherein said sealing lip portion includes an annular groove on the O.D. surface thereof and wherein said locking step includes locking said groove onto the proximal end of said mounting portion.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein said locking step includes locking said sealing lip portion on the distal end of said mounting portion.
- 5. The method according to claim 4 wherein said sealing lip portion has an annular groove on the O.D. surface thereof and wherein said locking step includes locking said groove onto the distal end of said mounting portion.
- 6. The method according to claim 5 wherein said shaft is a truck prop. shaft and said first portion is a splined shaft having a larger O.D. than that of said second portion and, after said step of moving said sealing lip to its normal stretched configuration, attaching said mounting portion of said seal to a housing.
- 7. A method for installing a seal having a sealing lip over a first portion of a shaft for sealing against a second portion of said shaft, whereby said lip is prevented from contacting said first portion, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an annular seal having a mounting portion and a sealing lip portion having said sealing lip;
- (b) installing said seal over said first portion of said shaft including moving said sealing lip to a non-sealing configuration in which said sealing lip is out of contact with said shaft;
- (c) maintaining said sealing lip in said non-sealing configuration and out of contact with said first portion of said shaft during said installing step;
- (d) moving said sealing lip from said non-sealing configuration to its normal, sealing configuration in contact with said second portion of said shaft, after said seal has passed over said first portion and is over said second portion of said shaft, and
- (e) wherein said step of moving said sealing lip to said non-sealing configuration comprises reversing said sealing lip portion and placing the O.D. surface of said sealing lip portion in sliding contact with said first portion of said shaft with said sealing lip out of contact with said shaft.
- 8. The method according to claim 7 wherein said seal is made from an elastomeric material and said first portion of said shaft has a larger diameter than said second portion of said shaft and said step of installing said seal over said first portion includes stretching said sealing lip portion sufficiently to allow said first portion to pass through said sealing lip portion.
- 9. A method for installing a seal over a larger diameter portion of a shaft for sealing against a smaller diameter portion of said shaft comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an annular elastomeric seal having a mounting portion and a sealing lip portion having a sealing lip;
- (b) installing said seal over said larger diameter portion of said shaft including stretching said sealing lip to a larger diameter than that of said larger diameter portion and maintaining said sealing lip out of contact with said larger diameter portion during said installing step; and
- (c) returning said sealing lip from its stretched configuration to its normal, sealing configuration in contact with said smaller diameter portion of said shaft after said seal has passed over said larger diameter portion and is over said smaller diameter portion.
- 10. The method according to claim 9 wherein said sealing lip portion has an annular groove on the O.D. surface thereof and wherein said installing step includes folding said sealing lip portion over on top of said mounting portion and locking said groove onto said mounting portion.
