Claims
- 1. A method for castrating livestock using a locking clamp having curved jaws and a pair of handles, said method comprising:
- incising the scrotum and removing the testis to expose the spermatic cord;
- applying said jaws of said clamp over the exposed spermatic cord;
- rotating the clamp with the cord secured between the jaws by mechanical rotative force applied to the clamp from a source of torque coupled with one of said handles; and
- continuing to twist the cord by said rotating of the clamp until the cord breaks as a result of said twisting.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said clamp is applied to said cord in a manner so that the cord may be rotated generally longitudinally of the rotation of the clamp, thereby twisting the cord along its longitudinal axis.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said jaws of the clamp are applied to said cord to exert holding force, whereby the cord is securely maintained within the jaws but not severed by the same.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the clamp is locked in position to maintain holding force exerted by the jaws on the cord to prevent slippage of the cord from the jaws during rotation.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said rotation of the clamp with the cord secured therein causes the cord to break, thereby creating a knot-like formation at the point of breakage on the cord to prevent excessive bleeding and reduce the likelihood of subsequent infection.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the clamp is releasably engaged to said source of torque.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the clamp is releasably engaged to said source of torque in a manner so that the clamp rotates about an axis projecting through the jaws so that the cord secured within the jaws twists about the approximate axis of rotation of the mechanical rotative force.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said source of torque is an electric motor.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said electric motor is a cordless, electric drill.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the scrotum is incised from a point above the testes through the ventral extremity of the scrotum to allow proper fluid drainage.
