Claims
- 1. A method for underground mining of mineral deposits comprising:
- a. providing two tunnels in spaced parallel relationship adjacent the working block of said mineral deposits,
- b. providing a mining crosscut between said tunnels,
- c. providing within said crosscut, a tunnellike mining shield having a bottom portion and a side wall extending upwardly at a generally acute angle therefrom, said shield being open opposite said side wall to expose an interior wall of said crosscut, and being formed from a plurality of forwardly advanceable arch sections positioned in side-by-side relationship.
- d. mining the exposed interior wall of said crosscut from within said crosscut by a mining machine traveling within said shield the extent of the crosscut,
- e. removing the mined material from said crosscut, and
- f. advancing said shield in the mining direction to occupy the volume of said cut and leave the roof and wall posterior to the crosscut unsupported.
- 2. A method as in claim 1 and including:
- a. mining said exposed wall by making a plurality of successive cuts across the width thereof, and
- b. advancing said arch sections successively to each of said cuts.
- 3. A method as in claim 2 and wherein:
- each of said successive cuts progresses in a direction opposite to the next preceeding cut.
- 4. A method as in claim 3 and including:
- removing said mined material from the mining area by conveying it from said crosscut to one of said tunnels and through said one of said tunnels to the surface.
- 5. A method as in claim 4 and including:
- permitting said posterior wall to collapse behind said shield members.
- 6. A method as in claim 5 and including:
- a. reversing said shield members so that the collapsed posterior wall becomes the exposed wall, and
- b. mining said exposed wall in the manner as originally done.
- 7. A method as in claim 1 and including:
- advancing each of said shield members individually immediately after the mining machine passes said each of said arch sections.
- 8. A method as in claim 7 and wherein:
- advancement of each said arch section is affected by contact with said mining machine during movement thereof.
