Claims
- 1. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that actual engine output is lower than a pre-selected value, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that actual engine output is equal to or greater than said pre-selected value, operating the engine with ignition timing retarded from optimal timing to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and terminating said adding of air via said air introduction device.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the actual engine output is detected by measuring a mass airflow into the engine.
- 3. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the actual engine output is detected by measuring a position of a throttle valve throttling an airflow into the engine.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said rich air-fuel mixture is richer than 12:1.
- 5. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said air introduction device is an air pump.
- 6. The method recited in claim 5 wherein a voltage applied to said pump is adjusted to control an amount of air added via said pump.
- 7. The method recited in claim 6 further comprising determining said amount of said air added via said pump based on exterior condition.
- 8. The method recited in claim 7 wherein said exterior conditions include at least atmospheric pressure and temperature.
- 9. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising adjusting said rich air-fuel ratio based on an amount of air added via said air introduction device.
- 10. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising adjusting air entering the engine when transitioning from said lean operation to said rich operation.
- 11. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that an actual engine output is smaller than a pre-selected value and an exhaust temperature is lower than a pre-selected threshold, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that the actual engine output is equal to or greater than said pre-selected value and the exhaust temperature is lower than said pre-selected threshold, operating the engine with ignition timing retarded from optimal timing to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and in response to an indication that the exhaust temperature is equal to or higher than said pre-selected threshold, operating the engine to combust a stoichiometric air-fuel mixture.
- 12. The method recited in claim 11 wherein said pre-selected threshold is a catalyst light-off temperature.
- 13. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that the engine is in an idle condition, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that the engine is in a non-idle condition, operating the engine with ignition timing retarded from optimal timing to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and terminating said adding of air via said air introduction device.
- 14. The method recited in claim 13 wherein said indication that the engine is in the idle condition is generated by measuring a position of a throttle valve throttling an airflow into the engine.
- 15. The method recited in claim 13 wherein said indication that the engine is in the idle condition is generated by monitoring whether the engine is in engine idle speed control.
- 16. The method recited in claim 13 wherein said rich air-fuel mixture is richer than 12:1.
- 17. The method recited in claim 13 wherein said air introduction device is an air pump.
- 18. The method recited in claim 17 wherein a voltage applied to said pump is adjusted to control an amount of air added via said pump.
- 19. The method recited in claim 18 further comprising determining said amount of said air added via said pump based on exterior condition.
- 20. The method recited in claim 19 wherein said exterior conditions include at least atmospheric pressure and temperature.
- 21. The method recited in claim 13 further comprising adjusting said rich air-fuel ratio based on an amount of air added via said air introduction device.
- 22. The method recited in claim 13 further comprising adjusting air entering the engine when transitioning from said lean operation to said rich operation.
- 23. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that the engine is in an idle condition and an exhaust temperature is lower than a pre-selected threshold, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that the engine is in a non-idle condition and the exhaust temperature is lower than said pre-selected threshold, operating the engine with ignition timing retarded from optimal timing to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and in response to an indication that the exhaust temperature is equal to or higher than said pre-selected threshold, operating the engine to combust a substantially stoichiometric air-fuel mixture.
- 24. The method recited in claim 23 wherein said pre-selected threshold is a catalyst lit-off temperature.
- 25. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that an engine airflow is smaller than a pre-selected value, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that the engine airflow is equal to or greater than said pre-selected value, operating the engine with ignition timing retarded from optimal timing to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and terminating said adding of air via said air introduction device.
- 26. The method recited in claim 25 wherein the engine airflow is detected by measuring a mass airflow into the engine.
- 27. The method recited in claim 25 wherein the engine airflow is detected by measuring a position of a throttle valve throttling an airflow into the engine.
- 28. The method recited in claim 25 wherein said rich air-fuel mixture is richer than 12:1.
- 29. The method recited in claim 25 wherein said air introduction device is an air pump.
- 30. The method recited in claim 29 wherein a voltage applied to said pump is adjusted to control an amount of air added via said pump.
- 31. The method recited in claim 30 further comprising determining said amount of said air added via said pump based on exterior condition.
- 32. The method recited in claim 31 wherein said exterior conditions include at least atmospheric pressure and temperature.
- 33. The method recited in claim 25 further comprising adjusting said rich air-fuel ratio based on an amount of air added via said air introduction device.
- 34. The method recited in claim 25 further comprising adjusting air entering the engine when transitioning from said lean operation to said rich operation.
- 35. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that an engine airflow is smaller than a pre-selected value and an exhaust temperature is lower than a pre-selected threshold, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that the engine airflow is equal to or greater than said pre-selected value and the exhaust temperature is lower than said pre-selected threshold, operating the engine with ignition timing retarded from optimal timing to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and in response to an indication that the exhaust temperature is equal to or higher than said pre-selected threshold, operating the engine to combust a stoichiometric air-fuel mixture.
- 36. The method recited in claim 35 wherein said pre-selected threshold is a catalyst light-off temperature.
- 37. A method for operating an engine with an emission control device in an exhaust system of the engine, and an air introduction device coupled to the engine exhaust system, the method comprising:in response to an indication that actual engine output is lower than a pre-selected value, operating the engine to combust a rich air-fuel mixture and adding air via the air introduction device; in response to an indication that actual engine output is equal to or greater than said pre-selected value, operating the engine to combust a lean air-fuel mixture; and terminating said adding of air via said air introduction device.
