Claims
- 1. A method for lyophilizing a solution, the method comprising:
depositing the solution into one or more containers; positioning a covering plate comprising one or more protuberances projecting from a surface to align with an opening of the one or more containers, the one or more protuberances adapted to fit inside at least a portion of the one or more containers; covering the one or more containers with the covering plate before placing the one or more containers and the covering plate inside a lyophilizing apparatus or covering the one or more containers with the covering plate after placing the one or more containers and the covering plate inside the lyophilizing apparatus, the one or more projecting protuberances engaged inside the at least a portion of the one or more containers; and at least partially lyophilizing the solution by cooling the solution and applying a vacuum to the solution, wherein at least partially lyophilizing the solution allows vapor to escape through an annular gap between each of the one or more protuberances and a side wall of each of the one or more containers.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising suspending a rack within a tub, the rack adapted to suspend the one or more containers in the tub.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein suspending the rack within a tub prevents the one or more containers from coming into contact with a cooling source of the lyophilizing apparatus.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein preventing the one or more containers from coming into contact with the cooling source prevents the one or more containers from coming into contact with a cooling shelf.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein depositing the solution into the one or more containers comprises depositing the solution into one or more syringes.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein covering the one or more containers with the covering plate forms a lid preventing the escape of lyophilizate from the one or more containers during the lyophilization process.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein covering the one or more containers with the covering plate prevents contamination of lyophilzate from one container by the lyophilizate from another container when two or more containers are lyophilized simultaneously.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising preparing the solution containing about 38 mg/ml of leuprolide acetate.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein depositing the solution into the one or more containers comprises depositing the solution containing about 0.3 ml of leuprolide acetate into each of the one or more containers.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein cooling the solution comprises cooling the solution by convection.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein cooling the solution comprises cooling the solution by radiation.
- 12. The method of claim 1 wherein cooling the solution comprises cooling the solution by convection and radiation.
- 13. The method of claim 1 wherein cooling the solution comprises cooling the solution to a temperature between about 0° C. and −50° C.
- 14. The method of claim 1 wherein lyophilizing the solution produces about 11.4 mg of lyophilizate in each container.
- 15. The method of claim 1 further comprising removing the covering plate from the one or more containers after the lyophilization of the solution.
- 16. The method of claim 15 further comprising examining the surface of the covering plate for retained lyophilizate and discarding the one or more containers from which the lyophilizate came.
- 17. The method of claim 1 further comprising sealing the one or more containers containing the at least partially lyophilized pharmaceutical.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein sealing the one or more containers comprises inserting a plunger into each opening of one or more syringes.
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein inserting a plunger into each opening of one or more syringes comprises inserting a plunger into each opening of one or more female syringes of a syringe-to-syringe assembly.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein inserting a plunger into each opening of one or more syringes comprises inserting a plunger into each opening of one or more male syringes of a syringe-to-syringe assembly.
