Claims
- 1. A method of machining workpieces, said method comprising the steps of moving a workpiece (W) from a first location (30) disposed on a first side of a machine tool (100) to a chuck (101) disposed in the machine tool, said step of moving the workpiece to the chuck including gripping the workpiece with a transfer structure (204) and moving the workpiece along a straight path (A), said method further including gripping the workpiece with the chuck, machining the workpiece while it is gripped by the chuck, thereafter, moving the workpiece (W) from the chuck (101) to a second location (40) disposed on a second side of the machine tool opposite from the first side, said step of moving the workpiece from the chuck to the second location includes gripping the workpiece with the transfer structure and continuing the movement of the workpiece along the straight path, said method being characterized by said steps of moving the workpiece (W) to the chuck (101) and moving the workpiece from the chuck further including opening a door (116) to unblock an opening (117) which extends across the top (106, 107) and down opposite sides (108, 109 and 110, 111) of a housing (102) which encloses the chuck, moving the transfer structure (204) along the straight path (A) from the first location (30) through the portion of the opening (117) which extends down the one side (108,109) of the housing, through the portion of the opening which extends across the top (106, 107) of the housing, and through the portion of the opening (117) which extends down the opposite side (108, 109) of the housing to the second location (40).
- 2. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of moving the workpiece along a straight path (A) includes moving a carriage (202) along a linear track (201) which extends above the housing (102) with the workpiece (W) held by a gripper (205) disposed on the transfer structure (204) with the gripper (205) at a level which is below the top (106, 107) of the housing (102), said step of moving the carriage (202) along a linear track (201) includes moving the workpiece (W) in a first direction through the portion of the opening (117) which extends down the one side (108, 109) of the housing (102) prior to performing said step of machining the workpiece and, after performance of said step of machining the workpiece, moving the workpiece in the first direction through a portion of the opening (117) in the other one of the sides (110, 111) of the housing (102).
- 3. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of machining the workpiece includes rotating the workpiece about a vertical axis (B), said steps of moving the workpiece along a straight path (A) and continuing the movement of the workpiece along the straight path includes moving the workpiece along a straight path (A) which extends perpendicular to the axis of (B) of rotation of the workpiece.
