Claims
- 1. A method of making a bag-in-box composite container comprising the steps of:
- (a) erecting an initially flat blank by folding said blank to form an outer box having a top end panel and an opposing bottom end panel perpendicular to and connected by a continuous side wall to define a hollow box cavity, said top end panel having an aperture therein, an inner surface and an outer surface;
- (b) placing said erected outer box within restraining means;
- (c) heating a hollow, injection molded preform having a top portion and a lower body portion to soften the body portion of the preform and keeping the top portion of the preform at a temperature below its softening temperature during said heating, said top portion defining a pouring spout surrounded by an annular flange having a lower surface and said pouring spout having an outer surface;
- (d) inserting said heated and softened body portion of said hollow preform into said hollow box cavity through said aperture in said top end panel until the lower surface of said annular flange rests against said outer surface of said top end panel, said top portion of said preform remaining outside said hollow box cavity;
- (e) expanding said heated and softened body portion of said hollow preform within said hollow box cavity such that said body portion of said hollow preform comes into contact with said inner surface of said top end panel is held between the lower surface of said flange adjacent the outer surface of said top end panel and said expanded body portion adjacent the inner surface of said top end panel, thereby forming said bag-in-box composite container, and;
- (f) removing said bag-in-box composite container from said restraining means.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said restraining means comprises a blow mold.
- 3. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said restraining means comprises a cage.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said body portion of said heated and softened hollow preform is expanded by injecting expansion means into said preform.
- 5. The method recited in claim 4 wherein said expansion means comprises a pressurized gas.
- 6. The method recited in claim 4 wherein said expansion means comprises a product to be contained with said bag-in-box composite container.
- 7. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said hollow preform is made from a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, styrene acrylonitrile copolymers, ethylene vinylalcohol copolymers, or laminated layers thereof.
- 8. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said outer surface of said pouring spout has closure receiving means projecting radially therefrom.
- 9. The method recited in claim 8 wherein said closure receiving means comprises screw threads.
- 10. A method of making a bag-in-box composite container having an inner plastic bag and an integral outer pouring spout, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) erecting an initially flat blank by folding said blank to form an outer box having a top end panel and an opposing bottom end panel perpendicular to and connected by a continuous side wall to define a hollow box cavity, said to pend panel having an aperture therein, an inner surface and an outer surface;
- (b) placing said erected outer box below parison forming means;
- (c) extruding a parison from said parison forming means into said hollow box cavity through said aperture in said top end panel of said erected outer box, said parison having a body portion, a closed bottom portion, and a top portion, said body portion and said closed bottom portion of said parison being inside said hollow box cavity, said top portion of said parison remaining outside said hollow box cavity;
- (d) closing restraining means having a top section including a flange forming means around said erected outer box whereby said top section of said restraining means grasps said top portion of said parison remaining outside said hollow box cavity; said top section of said restraining means having an outer surface;
- (e) severing said top portion of said parison from said parison forming means;
- (f) expanding said parison within said hollow box cavity such that said body portion and said closed bottom portion of said parison expands to form said inner plastic bag, such that a portion of said inner plastic bag is adjacent said inner surface of said top end panel and said top portion of said parison expands to form said integral outer pouring spout including said flange having a lower surface adjacent said outer surface of said top end panel so that a portion of said top end panel is held between said lower surface of said flange and said expanded body portion, thereby forming said bag-in-box composite container; and
- (g) opening said restraining means and removing said bag-in-box composite container therefrom.
- 11. The method recited in claim 10 wherein said restraining means comprises a split blow mold.
- 12. The method recited in claim 10 wherein said outer surface of said top section of said restraining means has closure forming means thereon.
- 13. The method recited in claim 12 wherein said closure forming means comprises screw threads.
- 14. The method recited in claim 10 wherein said parison forming means comprises an extrusion nozzle.
- 15. The method recited in claim 10 wherein said expansion means comprises a pressurized gas.
