Claims
- 1. A method for forming teeth on two splines of a wobblestick having a body with a longitudinal axis and a radius, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck for rotary movement about the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, moving a cutting hob having a radius and an axis in respect to the wobblestick until the axis of the hob is located a distance equal to the sum of the radii of the hob and wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick to engage the splines of the wobblestick, the axis of the hob being located at an offset angle in respect to the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, moving the hob longitudinally of the wobblestick parallel to the axis of the wobblestick to cut the teeth and to cut the portion underlying the teeth to the same radius as the wobblestick and angularly shifting the angle between the axis of the hob and wobblestick to vary the offset angle of the teeth.
- 2. A method for forming teeth on the spline of a wobblestick having a longitudinal axis and a radius via a cutting hob having a radius and an axis, there being an offset angle between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of the spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the spline to form part of one helix of the teeth and to form one part of the portion underlying the teeth the same radius as the wobblestick, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth and to form the other part of the portion underlying the teeth to the same radius as the wobblestick, flipping the hob substantially end for end, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth and to form one part of the portion underlying the teeth to the same radius as the wobblestick, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, and rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the spline to finish the formation of said other helix of the teeth and to form the other part of the portion underlying the teeth to the same radius as the wobblestick.
- 3. A method for forming teeth on two splines of a wobblestick having a longitudinal axis and a radius via a cutting hob having a radius and an axis, there being an offset angle between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of the spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the first spline to form part of one helix of the teeth and the part of the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the first spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth and the portion of the wobblestick underlying the tooth, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of second spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the second spline to form part of one helix of the teeth and the part of the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the second spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth and the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth, flipping the hob substantially end for end, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the second spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth and the part of the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the second spline to finish the formation of said other helix of the teeth and the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the first spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth and the part of the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, and rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the first spline to finish the formation of the other helix of the teeth and the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth and thus the teeth of the wobblestick and the portions of the wobblestick underlying the teeth.
- 4. A method for forming teeth on the spline of a wobblestick having a longitudinal axis and a radius via a cutting hob having a radius and an axis, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of the spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline to form part of one helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to a lesser angle, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick for a distance until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline on the other side of such midpoint, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth, altering the angle between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick by 180 degrees in a plane, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick for a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to a lesser angle, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline on the other side of such midpoint, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, and rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the spline to finish the formation of said other helix of the teeth.
- 5. The method of claim 4 characterized in that said leading and trailing faces include leading and trailing edges respectively with additional alteration of the offset angle at the transitions between the leading edge and leading face and trailing face and trailing edge respectively.
- 6. The method of claim 4 characterized in that the axis of the hob is moved in respect to the axis of the wobblestick during the setting of at least one of the offset angles so as to produce a set offset angle without an equivalent angular shifting between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick.
- 7. A method for forming teeth on two splines of a wobblestick having a longitudinal axis and a radius via a cutting hob having a radius and an axis, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of one spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a spaced distance from the midpoint of the first spline to form part of one helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to a lesser angle, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline on the other side of such midpoint, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the first spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of second spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a spaced distance from the midpoint of the second spline to form part of one helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to a lesser angle, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline on the other side of such midpoint, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the second spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth, altering the angle between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick by 180 degrees in a plane, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a spaced distance from the midpoint of the second spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to a lesser angle, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline on the other side of such midpoint, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the second spline to finish the formation of said other helix of said teeth, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain spaced distance from the midpoint of the first spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to a lesser angle, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until a certain distance spaced from the midpoint of the spline on the other side of such midpoint, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, and rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the first spline to finish the formation of the other helix of the teeth and thus the teeth of the wobblestick.
- 8. The method of claim 7 characterized in that the axis of the hob is moved in respect to the axis of the wobblestick during the setting of at least one of the offset angles so as to produce a set offset angle without an equivalent angular shifting between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick.
- 9. In a method for forming teeth on a wobblestick having a body with a radius including movement between a hob and the wobblestick while cutting the teeth on the wobblestick, the improvement of the minimum distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick remaining uniform throughout the forming of the teeth so as to form the portion of the wobblestick underlying the teeth to the same radius as the body of the wobblestick.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the body of the wobblestick has a diameter and characterized by the location of the hob at the minimum distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick produces teeth having a minor diameter equal to the diameter of the body of the wobblestick.
- 11. The method of claim 9 characterized in that said minimum distance is substantially equal to the sum of the radius of the hob plus the radius of the body of the wobblestick.
- 12. The method of claim 9 wherein the teeth have faces and characterized in that there is movement between the hob and the wobblestick in a linear direction such that the faces of the teeth are flat.
- 13. The method of claim 9 wherein the teeth have faces and characterized in that there is an angular movement between the hob and wobblestick such that the faces of the teeth are arcuate.
- 14. The method of claim 9 characterized in that a reduced section is produced in the body of the wobblestick by reducing the distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick at a time other than during the forming of the teeth.
- 15. The method of claim 9 characterized in that a reduced section is formed in the wobblestick in an operation separate from the formation of the teeth of the wobblestick.
- 16. The method of claim 13 wherein the teeth have leading and trailing faces and there is an angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick and characterized in that the angular relationship is different between forming the leading and trailing faces.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the teeth have leading and trailing edges and characterized in that the angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is greater in extent during the formation of the leading and trailing edges than during the formation of the leading and trailing faces.
- 18. In a method for using a hob to form teeth on a wobblestick including movement between the hob and the wobblestick while cutting the teeth on the wobblestick, the axis of the hob spaced a distance from the axis of the wobblestick, the teeth having leading and trailing faces and leading and trailing edges, the improvement of the minimum distance between the axis of the the hob and the axis of the wobblestick remaining uniform throughout the forming of most of the longitudinal length of the teeth with an angular movement between the hob and the wobblestick such that the faces of the teeth are arcuate, wherein the angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is different during the forming of the leading and trailing faces, wherein the angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is greater in extent during the formation of the leading and trailing edges than during the formation of the leading and trailing faces, and wherein the distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is reduced during the formation of the leading and trailing edges.
- 19. The method of claim 12 wherein there is a center section between the leading and trailing faces and the angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is different during the forming of the center section than during the forming of the leading and trailing faces.
- 20. A method for forming teeth in splines of a wobblestick having a body with a longitudinal axis and a radius comprising locating the wobblestick in a chuck for rotary movement about the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, moving a cutting hob having a radius and an axis in respect to the wobblestick until the axis of the hob is located a distance equal to the sum of the radii of the hob and wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick to engage the splines of the wobblestick, the axis of the hob being located at an offset angle in respect to the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, moving the hob longitudinally of the wobblestick parallel to the axis of the wobblestick to cut the teeth and angularly shifting the axis of the hob in respect to the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick to vary the offset angle of the teeth.
- 21. The method of claim 20 characterized in that said angular shifting occurs in discrete steps.
- 22. The method of claim 20 characterized in that said angular shifting occurs continuously.
- 23. The method of claim 21 characterized in that the distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is changed during at least one of said angular shifts so as to produce a set offset angle without an equivalent angular shifting between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick.
- 24. The method of claim 20 wherein the wobblestick has a left and right helix and characterized in that the hob is reversed substantially end for end between the cutting of the left and right helix.
- 25. The method of claim 21 characterized in that there is one angular shift per spline.
- 26. The method of claim 21 characterized in that there are two angular shifts per spline.
- 27. A method for forming teeth on the spline of a wobblestick having a longitudinal axis and a radius via a cutting hob having a radius and an axis, there being an offset angle between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of the spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the spline to form part of one helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth, flipping the hob substantially end for end, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, and rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the spline to finish the formation of said other helix of the teeth.
- 28. The method of claim 27 characterized in that said leading and trailing faces include leading and trailing edges respectively with additional alteration of the offset angle at the transitions between the leading edge and leading face and trailing face and trailing edge respectively.
- 29. The method of claim 27 characterized in that said leading and trailing faces are arcuate with the alteration of the offset angle occurring continuously throughout the formation of said one and said other helix respectively.
- 30. The method of claim 27 characterized in that the distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is changed during the setting of at least one of the offset angles so as to produce a set offset angle without an equivalent angular shifting between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick.
- 31. A method for forming teeth on first and second splines of a wobblestick having a longitudinal axis and a radius via a cutting hob having a radius and an axis, there being an offset angle between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick, the method comprising locating the wobblestick in a rotary chuck, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of a first spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the first spline to form part of one helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the first spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth, positioning the cutting hob off of one end of the second spline of the wobblestick with the axis of the hob located a distance equal to the sum of the radius of the hob and the radius of the wobblestick away from the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick, setting the offset angle of the axis of the hob to the axis of the wobblestick to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the second spline to form part of one helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the end of the second spline to finish the formation of said one helix of the teeth, flipping the hob substantially end for end, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the second spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the second spline to finish the formation of said other helix of said teeth, setting the offset angle to an angle corresponding to the angle of the leading face of the teeth to be formed, rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in the other direction along the longitudinal axis of the wobblestick until the midpoint of the first spline to form part of the other helix of the teeth, setting the offset angle to the angle of the trailing face of the teeth to be formed, and rotating the wobblestick while moving the hob in said other direction until the end of the first spline to finish the formation of the other helix of the teeth and thus the teeth of the wobblestick.
- 32. The method of claim 31 characterized in that each said leading and trailing faces include leading and trailing edges respectively with additional alteration of the offset angle at the transitions between the leading edge and leading face and trailing face and trailing edge respectively.
- 33. The method of claim 31 characterized in that said leading and trailing faces are arcuate with the alteration of the offset angle occurring continuously throughout the formation of said one and said other helix respectively.
- 34. The method of claim 31 characterized in that the distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is changed during the setting of at least one of the offset angles so as to produce a set offset angle without an equivalent angular shifting between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick.
- 35. The method of claim 12 wherein the teeth have leading and trailing faces and there is an angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick and characterized in that the angular relationship is different between forming the leading and trailing faces.
- 36. The method of claim 19 characterized in that the distance between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick is reduced during the forming of the center section so as to effectively change the angular relationship between the axis of the hob and the axis of the wobblestick without a physical change of this angular relationship.
