Claims
- 1. A method of making the electrode head of a tissue-implantable electrode, particularly a stimulating electrode which comprises an electrode head and an electrical lead attached thereto, comprising forming the electrode head of a carbon body and superficially activating a thin surface layer of said body by an oxidizing treatment so as to impart a microporous structure to said layer, whereby the surface of said body remains macroscopically smooth.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said activation step comprises oxidizing said body by means of an oxidizing chemical or an electrochemical treatment.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said activation step comprises annealing said body in an oxidizing atmosphere.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said atmosphere comprises a gas selected from the group consisting of oxygen, water vapor and carbon dioxide.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein a vitreous carbon body is oxidized to provide said microporous layer.
- 6. The method according to claim 5 wherein said oxidation is effected by air.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said surface layer has a pore diameter of about 5 Angstroms.
- 8. The method of claim 5 wherein said body is heated at about 400.degree.-800.degree. C.
- 9. The method according to claim 1 wherein said electrode comprises a heart pacemaker.
