Claims
- 1. A method for producing a cellulosic product, comprising:providing a cellulosic fraction; forming an aqueous mixture comprising a Group I metal silicate; carbonating the aqueous mixture for a period of time sufficient to obtain a pH of from about 7 to about 9 to initiate polymerization of a mineral network; and combining the polymerizing mineral network with the cellulosic fraction to produce a cellulosic product comprising a polymerized mineral network about the cellulosic material.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the Group I metal silicate is sodium silicate.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein carbonating the mixture comprises combining carbon dioxide with the mixture.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 where the aqueous mixture further comprises a Group II metal base or salt and the cellulosic product includes a precipitated carbonate filler material.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the cellulosic material is present in an amount from about 40% to about 95%, sodium silicate is present in an amount from about 1% to about 35% and the aqueous mixture further comprises calcium hydroxide in an amount of from about 1 to about 35%.
- 6. A method for producing a paper produce comprising:forming a mixture comprising from about 40% to about 60% cellulosic material and from about 1% to about 20% Group I metal silicate and from about 1% to about 45% of a Group II metal base or salt; carbonating the mixture to produce precipitated carbonate filler material and a polymerized mineral network about the cellulosic material; and forming the mixture into a paper product.
- 7. The method according to claim 6 wherein forming a mixture further comprises adding materials selected from the group consisting of precipitated calcium carbonate, retention aids, brightening agents, biocides, fungicides, sizing agents, starch, dyes and pigments, strength enhancing polymers, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The method according to claim 6 wherein the Group II metal base or salt is a magnesium base or salt.
- 9. The method according to claim 6 wherein carbonating the mixture comprises combining carbon dioxide with the mixture.
- 10. The method according to claim 6 wherein the Group I metal silicate is sodium silicate.
- 11. A method for producing a paper product, comprising:forming a mixture comprising from about 40% to about 60% cellulosic material, from about 1% to about 20% sodium silicate and from about 1% to about 45% of CaO; carbonating the mixture using CO2 to produce precipitated calcium carbonate filler material and a polymerized silica/silicate network about the cellulosic material; and forming the mixture into a paper product.
