Claims
- 1. A method for penetrating a sheet material web comprising:carrying said sheet material web on a fabric in a longitudinal direction; applying an air flow to said sheet material web so as to separate a portion of said web from the fabric; and penetrating the sheet material web with a penetrating device positioned adjacent the fabric in a spaced apart relationship therewith as said portion of said sheet material web is separated from the fabric and thereby brought into contact with the penetrating device.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising reapplying the separated portion of the sheet material web to the fabric.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of applying said air flow comprises applying a vacuum to a surface of said sheet material web facing said penetrating device.
- 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising providing a housing having a mouth opening towards said sheet material web, wherein said vacuum is applied to said web at said mouth of said housing.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said penetrating device comprises a slitting member.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said slitting member is disposed in a housing.
- 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising stripping a boundary layer from a surface of said sheet material web as it is carried past the penetrating device.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising providing a housing having a rearwardly extending nose portion for stripping said boundary layer.
- 9. The method of claim 4 wherein said housing further comprises a plate covering said mouth, said plate having a curved surface forming a recess, a plurality of apertures and a slot, wherein said step of continuously slitting said web further comprises extending said penetrating device through said slot into said recess.
- 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of monitoring the position of the fabric adjacent the penetrating device with a sensor.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of applying said air flow comprises applying a pressurized air stream to a surface of said sheet material web.
- 12. A method for penetrating a sheet material web comprising:carrying said sheet material web on a fabric; separating a portion of said sheet material web from said fabric with an air flow; penetrating said separated portion of said sheet material web with a penetrating device positioned adjacent said fabric in a spaced apart relationship therewith.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of separating said portion of said sheet material web comprises applying a negative pressure to said sheet material web.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein said sheet material web comprises a first and second surface, wherein said first surface is supported by said fabric and said second surface faces away from said fabric, and wherein said step of applying said negative pressure comprises applying a vacuum to said second surface of said sheet material web.
- 15. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of separating said portion of said sheet material web comprises applying a positive pressure to said sheet material web.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said sheet material web comprises a first and second surface, wherein said first surface is supported by said fabric and said second surface faces away from said fabric, wherein said step of applying said positive pressure comprises applying a pressurized air stream to said first surface of said sheet material web.
- 17. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of penetrating said sheet material web comprises slitting said sheet material web.
- 18. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of monitoring the position of the fabric adjacent the penetrating device.
- 19. The method of claim 12 wherein said penetrating device is disposed in a housing, and wherein said step of separating said portion of said sheet material web comprises directing said portion of said sheet material web into said housing and into contact with said penetrating device.
- 20. A method for penetrating a sheet material web comprising:carrying said sheet material web on a fabric; separating a portion of said sheet material web from said fabric with an air flow; directing said portion of said sheet material web into a housing positioned next to said fabric in a spaced apart relationship therewith; slitting said separated portion of said sheet material web with a slitting device disposed in said housing; and reapplying said separated sheet material web to said fabric.
