Claims
- 1. A method for adhering polyolefins to substrates consisting essentially of
- (i) mixing
- (a) silyl functional fumurates selected from the structures having the formula ##STR6## wherein each R.sup.1 is independently selected from an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbons; each R.sup.2 is independently selected from R.sup.1 and phenyl; each R.sup.3 is independently selected from a straight or branched chain alkylene group having 1 to 10 carbons; each Z is independently selected from the hydrogen atom, R.sup.1, and -R.sup.3 SiR.sup.2.sub.x (OR.sup.1).sub.3-x ; each Y is independently selected from the hydrogen atom and R.sup.1 ; and x has a value of 0 to 3; and
- (b) an alcohol;
- (ii) applying the mixture of (i) to a substrate;
- (iii) drying the substrate;
- (iv) applying a solid polyolefin to the substrate and,
- (v) melting the solid polyolefin in contact with the substrate.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is polyethylene.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is a copolymer of polyethylene.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the substrate consists essentially of a substrate selected from glass, ceramic, metal and metal oxides.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the alcohol is 10 to 95 percent by weight of the total solution.
