Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a carbon fiber, comprising anodically electrolyzing a carbon fiber in an alkaline aqueous solution, or anodically electrolyzing a carbon fiber in an acidic aqueous solution followed by washing with an alkaline aqueous solution, and then applying a sizing agent consisting essentially of an aliphatic compound with multiple epoxy groups to the fiber, said aliphatic compound including an atomic chain, said atomic chain having a linear structure and linking said epoxy groups and said atomic chain containing 20-200 atoms.
- 2. A process for preparing a carbon fiber, comprising anodically electrolyzing a carbon fiber in an alkaline aqueous solution, or anodically electrolyzing a carbon fiber in an acidic aqueous solution followed by washing with an alkaline aqueous solution, and then applying a sizing agent consisting essentially of an aromatic compound with multiple epoxy groups and having 6-47 atoms between the epoxy groups and an aromatic ring, said atoms between said epoxy groups and said aromatic ring having a linear structure and linking said epoxy groups and said aromatic ring, to the fiber.
- 3. A process for preparing a carbon fiber, comprising anodically electrolyzing a carbon fiber in an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt, and then applying a sizing agent consisting essentially of an aliphatic compound with multiple epoxy groups to the fiber, said aliphatic compound including an atomic chain, said atomic chain having a linear structure and linking said epoxy groups and said atomic chain containing 20-200 atoms.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 or 3, wherein the aliphatic compound with multiple epoxy groups is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of glycerol polyglycidyl ethers, diglycerol diglycidyl ethers, polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ethers and polypropylene glycol diglycidyl ethers.
- 5. A process for preparing a carbon fiber, comprising anodically electrolyzing a carbon fiber in an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt, and then applying a sizing agent consisting essentially of an aromatic compound with multiple epoxy groups and having 6-47 atoms between said epoxy groups and an aromatic ring, said atoms between said epoxy groups and said aromatic ring having a linear structure and linking said epoxy groups and said aromatic ring, to the fiber.
- 6. A process according to any one of claims 1-3 or 5, wherein the epoxy groups are glycidyl groups.
- 7. A process according to claim 2 or 5, wherein the aromatic compound with multiple epoxy groups in which atoms between the epoxy groups and an aromatic ring are 6-47, is a compound represented by the following formula (I), ##STR15## wherein R.sub.1 represents the following group, ##STR16## R.sub.2 represents an alkylene group of 2-30 carbon atoms, R.sub.3 represents --H or --CH.sub.3, and m and n are each an integer of 2-15, m+n being 4-30.
- 8. A process according to claim 7, wherein R.sub.2 is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or --CH(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 --.
- 9. A process according to claim 2 or 5, wherein the aromatic compound is a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound.
- 10. A process according to claim 9, wherein the main structure of the condensed polycyclic aromatic compound is naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene or pyrene.
- 11. A process according to any one of claims 1-3 or 5, wherein the sizing agent is applied in an aqueous solvent system.
