Claims
- 1. A method for preparing an embossed, curl-resistant laminated multilayer film substrate for use in the production of banknotes, security papers and the like which comprises:i) laminating (a) a first layer having inner and outer sides, comprising at least about 50 weight percent of a high density polyethylene having a density of at least about 0.94, said first layer being oriented in the transverse direction (TD) to a degree which is at least three times greater than the degree of orientation present in the machine direction (MD) to (b) a second layer comprising inner and outer sides, comprising at least about 50 weight percent of a high density polyethylene having a density of at least about 0.94, said second layer being oriented in the transverse direction to a degree which is at least three times greater than the degree of orientation present in the machine direction, with a laminating adhesive resin which comprises a component selected from the group consisting of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), said second layer being laminated in the film substrate so that said transverse direction of orientation of said second layer is substantially aligned with said transverse direction of orientation of said first layer, thereby forming an embossable substrate; and ii) embossing said substrate.
- 2. The method of claim 1 which further comprises providing copolymer polypropylene skins on at least one side of both (a) and (b).
- 3. The method of claim 2 which further comprises providing copolymer polypropylene skins on both the inner and outer sides of both (a) and (b).
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said laminating adhesive resin comprises an orientable linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) which is oriented in the machine direction during said laminating, thereby improving tear resistance in the transverse direction of said embossable substrate.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said laminating adhesive resin is of ABA construction, comprising a core layer B of orientable linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and layers A of low density polyethylene (LDPE) on either side of said core layer.
- 6. The method of claim 5 which further comprises providing a security device between (a) and (b), prior to said laminating.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said embossing comprises gravure printing on both sides of said substrate in register, using an opacifying ink so as to provide clear windows on both sides of said substrate aligned with said security device thereby rendering it visible from at least one side.
- 8. The method of claim 5 which further comprises protecting said security device from tampering by providing an adhesion-promoting primer between the copolymer polypropylene skins on the inner sides of (a) and (b) and the laminating adhesive resin.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said primer comprises polyethyleneimine (PEI).
