Claims
- 1. A method for preparing an aluminum-alloy article, comprising the steps of:
- providing an article precursor stock made of an aluminum alloy, the article precursor stock being initially oversize as compared with the final required size of the article;
- solution treating and annealing the article precursor;
- deforming the article precursor;
- aging the article room temperature;
- providing a curable organic coating material, the coating material having a non-volatile portion that is predominantly organic and is curable at about a heat-treatment temperature of the aluminum-alloy article precursor;
- applying the organic coating material to the aluminum-alloy article precursor; and
- heat-treating the coated aluminum article precursor at a temperature and for a time sufficient to cure the organic coating.
- 2. The method of claim 1, including an additional step, prior to the step of applying the organic coating, of
- anodizing the article precursor.
- 3. A method for preparing an aluminum-alloy article, comprising the steps of:
- providing a cylindrical rod of an aluminum alloy of a naturally aging composition, the rod having a diameter larger than that specified for a preselected diameter of rivet;
- solution treating and annealing the cylindrical rod;
- deforming the rod to the preselected diameter;
- aging the rod at room temperature;
- providing a curable organic coating material, the coating material having a non-volatile portion that is predominantly organic and is curable at about a heat-treatment temperature of the aluminum-alloy article precursor;
- applying the organic coating material to the rod produced in the step of aging;
- heat-treating the coating aluminum rod at a temperature and for a time sufficient to cure the organic coating, forming the article.
- 4. The method of claim 3, including an additional step, prior to the step of applying the organic coating, of
- anodizing the article precursor.
- 5. The method of claim 3, including additional steps, after the step of heat-treating, of
- cutting the heat-treated rod into lengths suitable for use as rivets, and
- fastening a first piece of a second piece using the rivets.
- 6. A method for preparing an aluminum-alloy article, comprising the steps of:
- providing an aluminum-alloy article precursor;
- deforming the article precursor to a precursor deformation state greater than the deformation state of a final article;
- providing a curable organic coating material, the coating material having a non-volatile portion that is predominantly organic and is curable at a curing temperature;
- applying the organic coating material to the deformed article precursor; and
- heating the coated aluminum article precursor to its final state at the curing temperature and for a time sufficient to cure the organic coating and partially anneal the article precursor to the deformation state required of the final article, thereby forming the article, the method including no step of solution treating/annealing.
- 7. The method of claim 6, including an additional step, after the step of deforming and before the step of applying, of
- anodizing the article precursor.
