Claims
- 1. A method for preventing the accumulation of inorganic deposits on a contact lens comprising the step of treating the lens with a solution comprising
- (A) hydrogen peroxide and
- (B) a composition comprising
- (i) at least one sequestering agent selected from the group consisting of sodium borogluconate and sodium gluconate and
- (ii) a neutralizing system capable of reducing the hydrogen peroxide in an exothermic reaction producing heat at a temperature of at least 30.degree. C. without external application of heat, thereby activating said sequestering agent wherein the lens is treated with the solution for a period of time sufficient to prevent the accumulation of inorganic deposits thereon.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the neutralizing system consists essentially of a reductase.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the reductase is catalase.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the neutralizing system consists essentially of a nonenzymatic reducing agent.
- 5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the neutralizing system comprises a reductase and a reducing agent selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbate, pyruvate and thiosulfate.
- 6. A method according to claim 1 wherein the sequestering agent is selected from the group consisting of gluconic acid, polymetaphosphates, and their salts.
- 7. A method according to claim 6 wherein the sequestering comprises sodium hexametaphosphate.
- 8. A method according to claim 1 wherein the sequestering agent is present in an amount of about 0.01% to 20% of the total composition weight.
- 9. A method according to claim 1 wherein the composition is in dry form and is added to the hydrogen peroxide.
- 10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the composition is in a tablet form.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein the tablet comprises a jacket and a core, and the sequestering agent is contained in the jacket or in the core.
- 12. A method according to claim 1 wherein the solution is formed by adding the composition to the hydrogen peroxide and wherein the lens is contacted with the hydrogen peroxide before the solution is formed.
- 13. A method according to claim 1 wherein the composition is in a delayed release form and is added to the hydrogen peroxide before the lens is contacted with the hydrogen peroxide.
- 14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the lens is treated with the solution at least about once a week.
- 15. A method according to claim 1 wherein the lens is treated with the solution at least about once a day.
