Claims
- 1. A method for forming a shim adapted to be inserted between a case and side surfaces of spools in a cassette, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a thin sheet of resilient elastic polymeric material having opposite surfaces;
- causing particles to impact at least one of the surfaces of the sheet until a layer-like portion of the sheet adjacent one of the surfaces applies a stress in all directions along a layer-like portion of the sheet adjacent the other of the surfaces to cause the sheet to bow uniformly; and
- cutting the sheet to form the shim.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein said causing step consists of causing the particles to impact one surface of the sheet until the impacted surface is convex.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said causing step consists of causing the particles to impact one surface of the sheet until the impacted surface is concave.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 particularly useful where the sheet as provided has an undulating surface due to nonuniform internal stresses, wherein said causing step comprises the steps of impacting one surface of the sheet with particles until that surface has a uniform profile, and then impacting the opposite surface of the sheet with particles until that opposite surface is convex.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein the uniform profile is planar.
- 6. A method according to claim 5 wherein the uniform profile is convex.
- 7. A method for causing a thin polymeric sheet with opposite surfaces to have a predetermined uniform surface profile comprising the steps of:
- causing particles to impact at least one of the surfaces of the sheet until a layer-like portion of the sheet adjacent one of the surfaces applies a uniform stress in all directions along a layer-like portion of the sheet adjacent the other surface to cause the sheet to have the desired surface profile.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, wherein said causing step consists of causing the particles to impact one surface of the sheet until the impacted surface is convex.
- 9. A method according to claim 7 wherein said causing step consists of causing the particles to impact one surface of the sheet until the impacted surface is concave.
- 10. A method according to claim 7 particularly useful where the sheet as provided has an undulating surface due to nonuniform internal stresses, wherein said causing step comprises the steps of impacting one surface of the sheet with particles until that surface has a uniform profile, and then impacting the opposite surface of the sheet with particles until that opposite surface is convex.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein the uniform profile is planar.
- 12. A method according to claim 11 wherein the uniform profile is convex.
- 13. A method according to claim 7 wherein the sheet is elongate, and said causing step includes the steps of moving the sheet longitudinally past a source of propelled particles to cause the particles to progressively impact the sheet.
