Claims
- 1. A method for producing, from sheet-like stock material such as paper, a narrow width pad-like cushioning dunnage product comprising a lengthwise oriented generally central coined portion extending transversely of the product for a major portion of the transverse dimension of the product but terminating adjacent laterally spaced non-coined edge portions extending lengthwise of the product, the product being in the order of approximately three and one-half to four inches in width, and approximately one to one and one-fourth inches in thickness at the non-coined edge portions of the produced pad-like product, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a known paper dunnage converter which utilizes a funnel-like member coacting with a paper former disposed interiorly of the funnel-like member and adapted to cause inward rolling of lateral edges of a sheet-like stock material and movement thereof into generally abutting relation at an exit end of the funnel-like member to form generally longitudinal rolled edge portions which meet at a rolled edge juncture prior to being coined at the rolled edge juncture to hold the rolled edge portions coupled to one another and form a full-size cushioning dunnage pad-like product having a width and thickness substantially greater than the width and thickness of the narrow-width pad-like cushioning product,
- providing a conversion kit for said converter to enable the converter to produce from the sheet-like stock material the narrow-width pad-like cushioning dunnage product,
- removing said paper former and said funnel-like member and then removably installing said conversion kit to enable said converter to produce said narrower width and lesser thickness dunnage product, said removal/installation being performed in such a manner that upon removal of said kit said converter may be reconverted back to the production of full size cushioning dunnage product upon reinstalling said paper former and said funnel-like member.
- 2. A method in accordance with claim 1 including providing said kit in the form of a funnel-like chute member and a coacting former member and positioning said chute member in lengthwise extending fashion and with said former member comprising an elongated generally rectangular shaped, in plan, bar, and orienting said former member so that it extend lengthwise of said chute member interiorly thereof, with a forward end of said former member being positioned generally adjacent a narrower exit end of said chute member, the stock material being adapted to pass through said chute member past said former member and out said exit end of said cute member, to form the dunnage product.
- 3. A method in accordance with claim 1 including providing means for adjustment of the position of said former member relative to said chute member in the lengthwise direction of the latter.
- 4. A method in accordance with claim 3 including providing a generally vertically oriented support rod extending through said chute member and securing it to said bar and to said chute member for supporting said bar in selected position in said chute member, and for supporting said chute member and coacting bar in said funnel-like member.
- 5. A method in accordance with claim 4 including providing slant washer means coacting with said support rod and said bar, for aiding in retaining said bar in a tilted position in said chute member relative to the horizontal.
- 6. A method for producing, from sheet-like stock material such as paper, a narrow width pad-like cushioning dunnage product comprising a lengthwise oriented generally central coined portion extending transversely of the product for a major portion of the transverse dimension of the product but terminating adjacent laterally spaced non-coined edge portions extending lengthwise of the product, the product being in the order of approximately three and one-half to four inches in width, and approximately one to one and one-fourth inches in thickness at the non-coined edge portions of the produced pad-like product, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a known paper dunnage converter which utilizes a funnel-like member coacting with a paper former disposed interiorly of the funnel-like member and adapted to cause inward rolling of lateral edges of a sheet-like stock material and movement thereof into generally abutting relation at an exit end of the funnel-like member to form generally longitudinal rolled edge portions which met at a rolled edge juncture prior to being coined at the rolled edge juncture to hold the rolled edge portions coupled to one another and form a full-size cushioning dunnage pad-like product having a width and thickness substantially greater than the width and thickness of the narrow-width pad-like cushioning product,
- providing a conversion kit for said converter to enable the converter to produce from the sheet-like stock material the narrow-width pad-like cushioning dunnage product,
- removing said paper former form said funnel-like member and removal by installing said conversion kit in the funnel-like member for enabling said converter to produce said narrower width and lesser thickness dunnage product, said removal/installation being performed in such a manner that upon removal of said kit said converter may be reconverted back to the production of full size cushioning dunnage product upon reinstalling said paper former back into said funnel-like member;
- said method additionally including providing means for adjustment of the position of said former member relative to said chute member in the lengthwise direction of the latter.
- 7. A method for producing, from sheet-like stock material such as paper, a narrow width pad-like cushioning dunnage product comprising a lengthwise oriented generally central coined portion extending transversely of the product for a major portion of the transverse dimension of the product but terminating adjacent laterally spaced non-coined edge portions extending lengthwise of the product, the product being in the order of approximately three and one-half to four inches in width, and approximately one to one and one-fourth inches in thickness at the non-coined edge portions of the produced pad-like product, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a known paper dunnage converter which utilizes a funnel-like member coacting with a paper former disposed interiorly of the funnel-like member and adapted to cause inward rolling of lateral edges of a sheet-like stock material and movement thereof into generally abutting relation at an exit end of the funnel-like member to form generally longitudinal rolled edge portions which meet at a rolled edge juncture prior to being coined at the rolled edge juncture to hold the rolled edge portions coupled to one another and form a full-size cushioning dunnage pad-like product having a width and thickness substantially greater than the width and thickness of the narrow-width pad-like cushioning product,
- providing a conversion kit for said converter to enable the converter to produce from the sheet-like stock material the narrow-width pad-like cushioning dunnage product,
- removing said paper former form said funnel-like member and removal by installing said conversion kit in the funnel-like member for enabling said converter to produce said narrower width and lesser thickness dunnage product, said removal/installation being performed in such a manner that upon removal of said kit said converter may be reconverted back to the production of full size cushioning dunnage product upon reinstalling said paper former back into said funnel-like member;
- said method additionally including providing said kit in the form of a funnel-like chute member and a coacting former member and positioning said chute member in lengthwise extending fashion in said funnel-like member, and with said former member comprising an elongated generally rectangular shaped, in plan, bar, and orienting said former member so that it extends lengthwise of said chute member interiorly thereof, with a forward end of said former member being positioned generally adjacent a narrower exit end of said chute member, the stock material being adapted to pass through said chute member past said former member and out said exit end of said chute member, to form the dunnage product;
- said method further including providing a generally vertically oriented support rod extending through said chute member and securing it to said bar and to said cute member for supporting said bar in selected position in said chute member, and for supporting said chute member and coacting bar in said funnel-like member.
- 8. A method in accordance with claim 7 including providing slant washer means coacting with said support rod and said bar, for aiding in retaining said bar in a tilted position in said chute member relative to the horizontal.
