Claims
- 1. The method of handling a web of flexible organic thermoplastic material that is highly oriented along the longitudinal dimension of the web comprising
- supplying a continuous web of said oriented material,
- engaging the web by a cooperating pair of nip rolls and pulling the web forward in the longitudinal dimension thereof from the supply at a substantially constant speed,
- penetrating one face of the moving web with a knife for slitting the web to partial depth along a line running in the longitudinal dimension of the web,
- engaging the moving web between a cooperating pair of pleating rolls and compressing the material along a line for forming longitudinally spaced apart lateral pleats in the web extending across the web,
- engaging the web thereafter on the surface of a drum, and
- driving the drum surface for advancing the web longitudinally at a speed in excess of the speed of the web for keeping the web in tension.
- 2. The method of claim 1, including
- cutting the web being advanced by the drum along the transverse dimension thereof on the surface of the drum at longitudinally spaced intervals, thereby forming rectilinear pieces of the material of equal length in succession, and
- holding the cut lengths on the surface of the drum for feeding them in succession at a feeding station thereon advanced from the place on the drum surface whereat the pieces are cut from the web.
