Claims
- 1. Process for producing a ceramic body consisting essentially of cordierite solid solution and having a linear thermal expansion of 600 to 900 ppm over the temperature range 25.degree. C. to 800.degree. C., the process consisting essentially of:
- (a) forming a glass having a composition consisting essentially of 14 to 18 weight percent MgO, 28 to 32 weight percent Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 52 to 56 weight percent SiO.sub.2,
- (b) reducing the glass to finely divided particles,
- (c) forming the particles into a green compact, and
- (d) heating the compact at a temperature within the range of 1350.degree. C. to 1425.degree. C. to promote devitrification and sintering of the compact to form a structurally integrated ceramic body.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein a glass is formed having the composition consisting essentially of 15 to 17 weight percent MgO, 29 to 31 weight percent Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 53 to 55 weight percent SiO.sub.2.
- 3. The process of claim 1 in which the glass is formed by mixing oxides or materials which upon heating convert to oxides of Mg, Al, and Si, prereacting the mixture by heating at a temperature of from 800.degree. to 1000.degree. C. for 1 to 4 hours, and melting the prereacted mixture at a temperature within the range of 1490.degree. C. to 1600.degree. C. for from 4 to 24 hours, the longer times corresponding to lower temperatures.
