Claims
- 1. A method for producing methacrolein, which comprises subjecting at least one member selected from the group consisting of isobutylene and tert-butanol to gas phase catalytic oxidation with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an oxide catalyst composition represented by the formula (I):
- Mo.sub.12 Bi.sub.a Ce.sub.b K.sub.c Fe.sub.d A.sub.e B.sub.f O.sub.g(I)
- wherein:
- A is cobalt solely, or a mixture of cobalt and magnesium wherein the atomic ratio of magnesium to cobalt is not more than 0.7,
- B is rubidium, cesium or a mixture thereof, and a, b, c, d, e, f and g are, respectively, the atomic ratios of bismuth, cerium, potassium, iron, A, B and oxygen, relative to twelve atoms of molybdenum,
- wherein
- 0<a.ltoreq.8,
- 0<b.ltoreq.8,
- 0<c.ltoreq.1.2,
- 0<d.ltoreq.2.5,
- 1.0.ltoreq.e.ltoreq.12,
- 0<f.ltoreq.2.0, and
- g is the number of oxygens required to satisfy the valence requirements of the other elements present; and
- wherein a, b, c and d satisfy the requirements of the following fomulae:
- 0. 05.ltoreq.b/(a+b+c).ltoreq.0.7,
- 0<c/(a+b+c).ltoreq.0.4,
- and
- 0<d/(a+b+d).ltoreq.0.9.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said A is cobalt solely.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said oxide catalyst composition is porous and has a pore diameter distribution such that the sum of pore volumes of pores having a pore diameter of 1 .mu.m or less is 95% or more, based on the total pore volume of said oxide catalyst composition.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein a, b and c in formula (I) satisfy the requirements of the formula: 0.1.ltoreq.b/(a+b+c).ltoreq.0.5.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein a, b and c in formula (I) satisfy the requirements of the formula: 0.02.ltoreq.c/(a+b+c).ltoreq.0.2.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein a, b and d in formula (I) satisfy the requirements of the formula: 0.1.ltoreq.d/(a+b+d).ltoreq.0.5.
- 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein said oxide catalyst composition is free of tungsten, antimony and niobium.
- 8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said oxide catalyst composition is free of copper, zinc, manganese, chromium, cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury, thallium, tellurium, selenium, thorium, uranium, fluorine, tungsten, antimony and niobium.
