Claims
- 1. The method of processing glass fibers to form molded bodies including disposing a mass of curable binder-bearing glass fibers on a reticulated support having spaced linear members lying in planes bisecting said mass at locations corresponding to the joint edges of said molded bodies, moving the mass of fibers and reticulated support to a molding station, compressing and molding the mass of fibers into a plurality of substantially rigid bodies while simultaneously partially severing said mass along said planes to form said molded bodies having unsevered fibers interconnecting said bodies, curing the binder in the connected molded bodies at the molding station, and moving the reticulated support and connected molded bodies away from the molding station.
- 2. The method of processing glass fibers to form molded acoustic tiles including disposing a mass of curable binder-bearing glass fibers on a reticulated support having spaced linear members lying in planes bisecting said mass at locations corresponding to the joint edges of said molded bodies, moving the mass of fibers and reticulated support to a molding station, compressing and molding the mass of fibers into a plurality of substantially rigid acoustic tiles while simultaneously partially severing said mass along said planes to form said acoustic tiles having unsevered fibers interconnecting said tiles, applying heat at the molding station to cure the binder in the molded acoustic tiles, and moving the reticulated support and connected molded acoustic tiles away from the molding station.
- 3. The method of processing glass fibers to form a plurality of molded fibrous bodies simultaneously including disposing a mass of curable binder-bearing glass fibers on a reticulated support having spaced linear members lying in planes bisecting said mass at locations corresponding to the joint edges of said molded bodies, aligning the reticulated support mounting the mass of binder-bearing glass fibers for movement to a molding station, moving the reticulated support and mass of fibers to the molding station adjacent multisectional molding dies, effecting relative movement of the dies compressing the fibers and molding the fibers into a plurality of substantially rigid fibrous bodies while simultaneously partially severing said mass along said planes to form said molded bodies having unsevered fibers interconnecting said bodies, curing the binder in the fibrous bodies at the molding station, and moving the reticulated support and molded fibrous bodies away from the molding station at the completion of a molding and binder-curing operation.
- 4. The method of processing glass fibers to form a plurality of molded fibrous sections including disposing a mass of curable binder-bearing glass fibers on a reticulated support having spaced linear members lying in planes bisecting said mass at locations corresponding to the joint edges of said molded bodies, delivering the reticulated support and mass of binder-bearing glass fibers mounted thereby to a station in alignment with a molding station, engaging a retractable conveyor with the support at the support aligning station, advancing the conveyor to move the support and mass of fibers to the molding station, disengaging the conveyor from the support, retracting the conveyor, compressing and molding the mass of fibers at the molding station into a plurality of substantially rigid fibrous sections while simultaneously partially severing said mass along said planes to form said molded bodies having unsevered fibers interconnecting said sections, curing the binder in the fibrous sections at the molding station, re-engaging the conveyor with the support at the completion of a molding operation, and moving the support and connected molded fibrous sections away from the molding station by the conveyor.
- 5. The method of processing glass fibers to form a plurality of molded fibrous acoustic tiles including disposing a mass of curable binder-bearing glass fibers on a reticulated support having spaced longitudinal and transverse linear members lying in planes bisecting said mass at locations corresponding to the joint edges of said molded acoustic tiles, delivering the support and mass of binder-bearing fibers mounted thereby to a station in alignment with a molding station, engaging a retractable conveyor with the support at the support aligning station, advancing the conveyor to move the support and mass of fibers to the molding station, disengaging the conveyor from the support, retracting the conveyor, engaging relatively movable dies with the mass of fibers on the support at the molding station compressing the fibers and molding the fibers into a plurality of acoustic tiles while simultaneously partially severing said mass along said planes to form said molded tiles having unsevered fibers interconnecting said tiles, circulating heated liquid in heat-transferring relation with the dies at the molding station to cure the binder, re-engaging the conveyor with the support at the completion of a molding operation, and moving the support and connected molded acoustic tiles away from the molding station by the conveyor.
- 6. The method of processing glass fibers to form a plurality of molded acoustic tiles simultaneously including disposing a mass of curable binder-bearing glass fibers on a reticulated support having spaced longitudinal and transverse linear members lying in planes bisecting said mass at locations corresponding to the joint edges of said molded acoustic tiles, delivering the support and mass of binder-bearing fibers mounted thereby to a first station in alignment with a molding station, engaging a retractable conveyor with the support at the support aligning first station, advancing the conveyor to move the support and mass of fibers to the molding station, disengaging the conveyor from the support at the molding station, retracting the conveyor, compressing and molding the mass of fibers at the molding station into a plurality of acoustic tiles while simultaneously partially severing said mass along said planes to form said molded tiles having unsevered fibers interconnecting said tiles, curing the binder in the acoustic tiles at the molding station, delivering a succeeding reticulated support and mass of curable binder-bearing fibers to the first station in alignment with the molding station, engaging the conveyor with both supports, and advancing the conveyor to move the support and acoustic tiles mounted thereby away from the molding station and concomitantly move the succeeding support and mass of fibers mounted thereby to the molding station.
