Claims
- 1. In the preparation of monomethylformamide and dimethylformamide by the catalytic reaction of formamide and methanol, the improvement comprising using as the catalyst a quaternary ammonium compound represented by the structure ##STR3## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 can be an alkyl radical of 1-12 carbon atoms;
- a hydroxy ethyl radical;
- a pyridyl radical; or
- a benzyl radical; and
- X can be Cl, Br, I, F or -OH, said reaction being run without the utilization of carbon monoxide.
- 2. The process of claim 1 in which the catalyst is tetramethyl ammonium bromide.
- 3. The process of claim 1 in which the catalyst is tetracethyl ammonium iodide.
