Claims
- 1. A method for the production of a porous, permeable molded body made of silicon carbide, comprising the steps of:
- molding a green body by extruding a starting material which includes:
- an organic binding agent that can be coked, and
- a compound selected from the group of compounds consisting of:
- a) a starting powder of silicon,
- b) a mixture of silicon with portions of silicon carbide, said silicon carbide being present in an amount no greater than 25% by weight of the compound,
- c) a mixture of silicon with portions of carbon, and
- d) a mixture of silicon with portions of silicon carbide and carbon, wherein said silicon carbide is present in an amount no greater than 25% by weight of the compound,
- subjecting the green body to a coking treatment in an inert-gas atmosphere to produce a treated molded body; and
- heating the treated molded body in the presence of nitrogen or an inert gas containing nitrogen to such a temperature causing free silicon to be converted with carbon in a reaction to form silicon carbide,
- wherein a recrystallization firing is performed at greater than 2000.degree. C.
- 2. A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that the recrystallization firing is performed between 2100.degree. and 2300.degree. C.
- 3. A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that the molded body is brought continuously to the recrystallization firing temperature.
- 4. A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that the reaction is performed first followed by the recrystallization firing.
- 5. A method in accordance with claim 4, characterized in that the recrystallization firing follows immediately after the reaction.
- 6. A method in accordance with claim 12, characterized in that the reaction is performed between 1400.degree. and 1900.degree. C.
- 7. A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that a compound from the carbohydrate family of compounds, or a modification of these compounds, is used as the binding agent.
- 8. A method in accordance with claim 7, characterized in that modified starches are used as the binding agent.
- 9. A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that the binding agent is also added to the starting powder in powder form.
- 10. A method in accordance with claim 12, characterized in that an at room temperature liquid binding agent is used.
- 11. A method in accordance with claim 12, characterized in that a water soluble binding agent is used.
- 12. A method in accordance with claim 12, characterized in that a share of the binding agent used is adjusted so that all of the carbon, including the carbon contained in the binding agent, lies between 0.8 and 1.2 of the stoichiometric ratio to the free silicon in the starting powder.
- 13. A method in accordance with claim 12, characterized in that an additive that serves to increase the electrical conductivity is added in a quantity that brings the specific electrical resistance between 0.1 to 3 ohm.times.cm.
- 14. A method in accordance with claim 13, characterized in that at least one element selected from the group of elements consisting of the third and fifth main or B-group of the periodic table is used as the additive.
- 15. A method in accordance with claim 14, characterized in that a boron compound is used as an additive.
- 16. A method in accordance with claim 15, characterized in that the boron compound is added in a quantity that assures the boron is present in the starting material at an amount of 0.05% to 1.0% by weight.
- 17. A method in accordance with claim 13, characterized in that the additive is added in powder form, with a particle size that is not greater than 10 .mu.m.
- 18. A method in accordance with claim 1, characterized in that free silicon and/or carbon of medium particle size, in the range of 10 to 70 .mu.m, is used.
